Letter from the Newsroom – Education Cuts

Rebecca Zepick Pic

Welcome to State of the State KS,

The Governor recently announced spending cuts totaling approximately $259 million  because of revenue shortfalls.  Some of the hardest hit will be the Department of Transportation losing $50 million and the education budget with $36 million from K-12 and $2 million in higher education cuts.

This week we take a closer look at the impact of recent budget cuts on education.  First we speak with Senator Janis Lee (D) about how she believes the cuts to education go even deeper than they first appear.  Watch Senator Janis Lee Explains Depth of Education Cuts.

The Department of Education has made cuts both in the field and in the agency and Diane DeBacker, the interim Commissioner of Education, says that student achievement scores will begin to drop with the new cuts.  Watch Department of Education Says Funding At Bottom Level.

Derrick Sontag from Americans For Prosperity says he believe the recent budget cuts are a first step in reining in wasteful government spending and that there is room for cuts in education while still maintaining high standards in public schools.  Watch Americans For Prosperity Support Budget Cuts.

Later this week we we will bring you stories on the Copenhagen conference on climate change.  Copenhagen may be 4668 miles (as the crow flies) from Topeka, but it is stirring up passions close to home.  Tune in later this week to hear more from both sides.

Enjoy this week’s edition,

Rebecca
