Opinion: On Tim Tebow and Liberal “Outrage”
On Tim Tebow and Liberal “Outrage”
By Jordan Yost
Have you prepared yourself to watch the most offensive, despicable, and controversial commercial in the 44 year history of the Super Bowl on Sunday? I certainly hope so, if not, your head might explode by just viewing the 30 second spot which, get this, is about a woman’s choice to not have an abortion. I know, let that sink in, disgusting isn’t it?
Still not outraged? Yeah, neither am I. For nearly the past month, whether it be in my classes, on websites like the DailyKos or the Huffington Post, or just in casual conversations, liberals have been screaming themselves hoarse over the idea that a center-right ad could sneak in among the mindless commercials that so dominate a typical Super Bowl telecast.
These are the same liberals who not only aren’t offended when a New York artist places Jesus’ crucifix in a jar of urine or activists burn the American flag, but mock the right for being off put by it. The 30 second spot describes the story of how a pregnant woman suffered severe complications shortly before she was to go into labor.
Doctors told her that the fetus was expected to be stillborn because of said complications and she should consider an abortion to save her life. The mother refused, had the baby, and the baby grew up to be a two-time BCS National Champion and Heisman Award winning quarterback named Tim Tebow.
Not once in the ad is the word ‘abortion’ uttered. Not once during the ad are pro-life or anti-choice messages presented. Not once are clinics or protestors or pictures with terminated fetuses shown. So what’s the big deal?
Apparently, among pro-choice circles in this country, the ad is a very big deal. But when asked why they are so upset, a sort of confused look crosses their face. They stare at me dumbfounded for not understanding their outrage. They say the ad is ‘anti-choice.’ The pro-choice movement claims that by presenting a once in a lifetime situation, Tim Tebow being the fetus in question, that this will somehow trick other women into not having abortions.
I disagree however, I say that this ad is the most pro-choice ad ever shown on network television. Mrs. Tebow made a choice. Her choice was to not have an abortion. If the term pro-choice is merely a synonym for abortion, then yes, I can see why the pro-choice movement is up in arms. But shouldn’t the Left also support a woman’s choice to not have an abortion as much as they support her right to have a procedure?
I could understand the Left’s ‘outrage’ had the ad featured overtly political messages, I could also understand their outrage if the ad was drenched with politically charged words like ‘abortion,’ ‘pro-life’ etc. But it’s not. Has the American Left moved so far from the political mainstream that a 30 second ad featuring a mother’s story about not having an abortion really be framed by Planned Parenthood as the 2010 equivalent to the 1984 film “Silent Scream?”
This is not a news story about abortion. This is a news story about choice; A mother’s difficult choice to carry her child to term against all odds. Focus on the Family’s choice to pay 3 million dollars for the spot. CBS’ choice to air the ad because the price was right.
If Planned Parenthood or any other of the other ‘pro-choice’ groups around the country doesn’t like it, they have two options; 1) they can make the choice to produce an ad and buy the airtime to run it next to the Tebow ad, or, 2) they can make a choice to not watch the Super Bowl at all. Because, after all, we live in a country where we have the right to choose, even if that choice isn’t always politically correct.
