Biography

David has been in the insurance business for 32 years. He is the owner and manager of David J. Powell & Associates, LLC, an insurance brokerage that works with hundreds of insurance agents around the state. His agency helps these agents find affordable health insurance coverage for the consumers and businesses they work with, from the companies he brings to the table.

David holds licenses with a variety of insurance companies, including life, health, disability, long-term care, Medicare supplement, worksite marketing and specialty products carriers. He does this so that he can provide provide highest quality outlets and variety of choices for his clients and for the clients of the agents who work with him.

Education, training and experience have always been important ways to serve Dave’s clients. As a college graduate with a degree in mathematics and having taught and coached at the high school level, he learned from his students that helping them understand helped them make better decisions. To help you, he has earned degrees as a Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Certified Financial Planner and Registered Health Underwriter.

Dave’s ambition is to help the all the citizens of Kansas make educated decisions as they choose their insurance programs.

Whether it is for health care, auto, homes, or businesses, Kansas needs a strong Commissioner of Insurance. In his 32 years of dealing with consumers, agents, and insurance companies, he has helped to bring about innovation where change was needed and has helped retain good programs and policies that needed to be maintained.

David is a small business owner. He knows that small business in Kansas create and sustain more that 80% of the jobs in this state. He has first hand knowledge of business owners, who are struggling to pay insurance premiums for their employees, or as a last resort, have had to discontinue insurance that their employees need and should have.

As an agent, Dave has sat across the table from the people, as well as across the desk from business owners and felt their deep concerns, about their insurance problems. He has represented them to make sure they received proper treatment and payments that were due to them.

David J. Powell is in a unique position to educate, protect and represent individuals and businesses… and to guide insurance agents and companies so we have a healthy insurance industry in our state.

University of Nebraska, Lincoln, BSE, 1968, Teachers College

Completed LUTC in 1979, Charter Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Certified Financial Planner, Registered Health Underwriter.

Activities: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor 1963, Handicap Instructor designation, Water Safety, 1963; Red Cross Special needs Water safety program director, City of Lincoln, 1964-1968. Water Safety Instructor, Nebraska 1968 – 1973; Kansas 1973 – 2003. Chairman, Butler County Red Cross 1981-1984. Exalted Ruler, El Dorado Elks, 1987-1989. Member El Dorado Chamber of Commerce.

Political – Ran as Republican candidate for Kansas Insurance Commissioner, 2002.

    Employment:

  • Math teacher – Giltner High School, Giltner, Nebraska, 1968 – 1970. Coached – Football, Girl’s Volleyball and Girl’s Track. Conference champions in all 3 sports.
  • Math Teacher – Pierce High School, Pierce, Nebraska – 1970- 1975. Coached – Football, Girl’s Volleyball and started the Girl’s track team. Girl’s Track had every girl in grades 9-12 participate (72 girls) and won every track meet for 5 years, qualifying more girls for the State track meet than any other school, regardless of size, in the state of Nebraska.
  • Math Teacher – El Dorado High School, El Dorado, Kansas – 1975 – 1978. Coached – Football, Wrestling, Girl’s Track, Boy’s Baseball and started the High School Swim Team in 1977. After leaving the school system to go into insurance, continued to coach the divers on the High School team.
  • Entered Insurance business, part time March of 1977 with American Amicable Life Insurance Company through their Coaches program. Lead Kansas agent life production for 10 years with company. American Amicable was purchased by American General during this time. Was in top 10 in life production with AG for 5 years prior to concentration being shifted the health insurance and related products. Still a producing General Agent with American General Independent Agent’s division. Still has over 1000 life clients.
  • Started David J. Powell & Associates, LLC in 1998 to expand MGA contracting to multiple carriers in Life, Health, Supplement and Senior markets.
    Became affiliated with Central Reserve Life (CRL) as Managing General Agent, 1986. Lead the national in production with
  • CRL several years and top 3 health insurance agency production every year for 21 years. CRL sold to American Enterprise in 2006.
  • Central Benefits National top producer for several years in 1990’s through early 2000’s until company stopped marketing fully insured products in Kansas. Largest group insured in Kansas was the Lawrence Public School District for 3 years.
    Additional Carriers – AFLAC, Transamerica, Aetna, Golden Rule, World Insurance, Preferred Health Systems, Harrington Health, Coventry, American Fidelity, Fidelity Security, Delta Dental, Vision Care Direct, American Enterprise.
    Formed Brokernet, LLC, 2000 with partners in Missouri and Oklahoma, for combined production purposes. Carriers: Assurant, American National of Texas, Canada Life, John Hancock, IAC, Mutual of Omaha, United Health. HPA, Illinois Mutual.
  • 1988 – 1990 Kansas State Manager – Century Life Insurance –Responsible for recruiting and training neophyte life agents (20). Started with scratch office.
  • Currently works with agents throughout Kansas as a brokerage outlet for health, life, disability, ancillary products and Senior products.

Passion: Helping agents succeed in sales process from beginning to sales conclusion, then providing superior customer service. Being a mentor and always a teacher/coach.
