Nuclear threat, Abbott snipes (again), warnings on the economy

This photo, taken on April 15, 2017, shows Korean People's Army (KPA) personnel waving after a military parade in Pyongyang marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of the late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung.

On April 5, the South Korean military reported a North Korea missile test in Sinpho, South Hamgyong province, after which the Japanese and South Korean governments both held emergency meetings.

"But the United States is troubled by China's economic retaliation against South Korea for taking appropriate steps to defend itself", he said.

"North Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister Sin Hong-chol responded in kind, saying if we notice any sign of assault on our sovereignty, our army will launch merciless military strikes against the U.S. aggressors, wherever they may exist".

"If the U.S. is planning a military attack against us we will react with a nuclear pre-emptive strike by our own style and method", Han said.

How did we get here? The country has conducted five nuclear tests and a number of missile launches in contravention of United Nations resolutions over the past few years.

US President Donald Trump has said that will not happen, and stepped up pressure on the isolated North.

USA diplomats will meet with the Chinese and American allies at the United Nations later this month to discuss the way forward, Thornton said.

Tensions have increasingly ratcheted up between North Korea and the United States in recent weeks.

And while there, he sent a warning to North Korea.

After 25 years of trying to deal patiently with North Korea over its nuclear program, Pence said, "all options are on the table" to deal with threat. North Korea says whatever action the United States may take, it will respond in kind.

US President Donald Trump told North Korea it has "gotta behave" when he answered questions from a reporter in the White House as the crisis escalated. North Korea is in a much better position than those countries.

What does North Korea say?

North Korea and South are technically still at war because their 1950-1953 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Mr Kim stressed that US-South Korean military exercises being staged were now the largest-ever "aggressive war drill" aimed at his country, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"If the United States dares opt for a military action (...) the DPRK is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the Americans", Kim told a news conference at UN headquarters in NY. So it's not at all certain that they would go as far as, say, cutting off the North's oil supply.

And what about other world powers?

Thornton said any new North Korean nuclear test "would draw a pretty significant worldwide response".

While reporters at the United Nations have heard similar rhetoric from North Koreans before, Monday's forceful wording was on a higher level.

"You read Clinton's book, and he said 'Oh, we made such a great peace deal.' And it was a joke", Trump said.

"This is a very risky path", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow.

He added that Japan needed to apply pressure on Pyongyang to "seriously respond to a dialogue" with the worldwide community.
