Juan Mata 'proud' to win Europa League for people of Manchester

At a time when the city of Manchester needed them the most, Manchester United delivered a fairy tale soccer championship victory that will forever be remembered, not just throughout England, but around the world.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has given the strongest hint yet that his record breaking time at Old Trafford will draw to a close this summer, revealing the existence of a number of offers from clubs both in England and overseas.

We were really, really sad because you think of life and football - you have no choice.

United are in the business of winning trophies, and they have won two this season - three if, like Mourinho, you count the Community Shield.

'We came here with one option, to win the trophy the club has never won, and we did.

Juan Mata and Chris Smalling emphasised how Manchester United were extra motivated to win the Europa League following Monday's atrocities at Manchester Arena.

Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp have received much praise for their work this season and getting into next season's Champions League - Mourinho has done that and added the actual tangible reward of two pieces of silverware on top.

"We felt the sadness of the city of Manchester".

"Obviously both sides were affected (by the attack in Manchester), but once you play the final, for that moment you forget it", said Bosz. "But if you'd told us at the start of the season we'd win three trophies and be in the Champions League we'd have taken it". "We've done it, and we're proud", said Pogba.

"At a time when we are grieving for the families that have lost loved ones we have a sport that has bought a little happiness at a hard time".

When it comes to a major final, you know what to expect from a Jose Mourinho team - a physically strong, compact, perfectly defensively-drilled side that will make it as hard as possible for the opposition to create chances, to score goals.

Spurs are in no position to scorn silverware but while Jose Mourinho targeted the low-hanging fruit of the League Cup and Europa League, those competitions ranked fourth and third respectively in Pochettino's priorities.

Mourinho's mood has often been dark this season but he still has that habit of dealing in his favourite currency, namely trophies. We have won every title in world football. I don't want to see any global friendlies, I am selfish. But I don't care about football for now.

'Three trophies in a season, I am really happy with the players after my most hard season as a manager'.

Wayne Rooney made a brief appearance as a substitute with a minute left and the game won, being handed the captain's armband by Antonio Valencia on what could well be his farewell appearance for United.

Mourinho's pragmatism paid off but he finished the season a place lower than his predecessor and kissing a trophy he had previously derided; United fans were entitled to expect more from the most expensively assembled squad in history.
