Hodgkinson later died of injuries in hospital.

Republican Rep. Gregg Harper of MS gaveled in the session on Thursday, and Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania opened the morning speeches.

"If Scalise was not there, he's the one with the security detail, we wouldn't have had any protection, and God knows how bad that might have been", Rep. Brad Wenstrup said Wednesday.

The family says in a statement Thursday that Mika suffered "massive trauma" Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a baseball practice, injuring a congressman and others. His picture is a caricature of Bernie Sanders as Uncle Sam and his feed is filled with anti-Trump sentiments.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Scalise was undergoing another surgical procedure on Thursday.

Bailey, who suffered a minor injury in the attack, surprised a roaring crowd of nearly 25,000 spectators in Nationals Park by hobbling on crutches to the pitcher's mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 80th Congressional Baseball Game for Charity.

Scalise and three others were shot by 66-year-old James Hodgkinson during a GOP baseball practice on Wednesday.

Dr. Jack Sava gave an update on Scalise's condition Friday afternoon and said Scalise was on the brink of death when he got to the hospital by helicopter Wednesday morning.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", he said.

Scalise remained in critical condition at a local hospital, his family by his side, grievously wounded by a bullet that entered at the hip and injured internal organs.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Prayers are still needed for pro-life Congressman Steve Scalise, who was injured yesterday after he was shot by a liberal activist.

Democrats easily defeated Republicans 11-2 in the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game, in an annual tradition that has taken on renewed importance in the wake of Wednesday's shooting in Alexandria, Virginia. Also wounded was former congressional aide Matt Mika, who now works for Tyson Foods in its Washington office. But he hopes it won't become necessary for Capitol Police to have to accompany members of Congress while they're back home in their districts. "She is awesome, and she's a hero", retired Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine told CBS of Griner.

"It's definitely something we have been looking at and we're going to look at in an even more intense manner now", he said. The popular annual GOP-Democrats baseball face-off, which raises money for charity, will go forward as planned Thursday evening and a big crowd is expected. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.
