Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

Two incredibly fearless Capitol Police officers were also injured along with a House aide.

In June 2006, police were dispatched to Hodgkinson's home in response to a domestic dispute that began when Hodgkinson allegedly hit a woman's dog while it slept in her driveway, according to a sheriff's report. She said he talked a lot about politics but, when pressed, said she didn't want to discuss her husband's views.

The wife of James Hodgkinson, who authorities say shot a congressman and injured others at a ballfield in Virginia, had no idea her husband would do it, and was sorry it happened.

"I hope the outcome of this tragedy will be unity, where we put our partisan differences aside and recognize that we are all here for a common objective", she said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We're fortunate enough to have security on our first floor, but I still don't think they have the tools to do a good enough job here", said Auerbach, who has repeatedly pushed for better safeguards like a magnetometer, employee swipe cards and security checks for the public. She said shortly before James Hodgkinson left, her "daughter just moved back home and has a 2-year-old".

When asked why he left and why he went to the Washington D.C. area specifically, Hodgkinson said her husband wanted to "work on taxes" with government officials, with a goal of changing the tax brackets. "The guy from Belleville was shooting people", Kaiser said. He had run out of money, his wife told reporters. At the request of the family, we will continue to provide periodic updates.

Mr Scalise, the House Majority Whip, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Hodgkinson also had arrests in his background for a series of minor offenses and at least one more serious offense. Though his office initially indicated he was in stable condition, it is now being reported that he is in "critical" condition and may require more surgery.

Reports say the event was unusual because the attack was sudden and unprovoked. A congressional staffer, Zach Barth, was shot in the leg; he was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the Post reports.

"He said, 'I understand, ' and said he needed to take the gun to a range to shoot it, Watson said".

As it turned out, Wanda had made a previous suicide try before moving in with the Hodgkinsons - and her boyfriend had broken up with the teen just before she took her life.

Democratic leaders during Trump's presidency have never encouraged their supporters to take violent action, and all of them universally condemned Wednesday's shooting while re-affirming the need for comity in the tragedy's aftermath.

She said she wasn't sure if there had been a catalyst for him leaving.

The FBI said Thursday that it had also processed Hodgkinson's vehicle, a white conversion van, where investigators found a cell phone, a computer and camera.

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m. Tickets for the game were selling at the rate of 500 per hour following the shooting, with proceeds benefiting a number of local charities.

A spokeswoman for Capitol Police did not return CNN's request for comment.
