Slater said that the shooting appeared to be "spontaneous", and that investigators had not yet determined Hodgkinson's motive. After arriving in Washington from his home in IL, he took part in a demonstration to protest Republican tax policy - not activity that would arouse suspicion.
The FBI was also able to piece together more of Hodgkinson's actions since he arrived in DC sometime in late March.
Hodgkinson, who was from IL but was living in Virginia at the time of the shooting, launched his attack carrying two weapons, a 7.62mm SKS rifle and a 9mm handgun, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
For most of that window in April, Congress was not in session.
"I had a great meeting with Steve-O this morning and he's bright, he's alert", Ryan said.
Hodgkinson displayed a photo of the Vermont Independent on his Facebook page.
Still, Slater said that there is no evidence that the gunman had advance knowledge that the lawmakers would be practicing there or that he was specifically targeting any of those involved in the practice. Orear said Hodgkinson was a passionate progressive and showed no signs of violence or malice toward others. Slater said it did not appear to be a "hit list", though Hodgkinson had done "cursory" searches of at least two of the politicians on his list. Duncan was the man who Hodgkinson passed and asked "are those Republicans" minutes before opening fire at the ballfield. In November, shortly after Trump was elected, he purchased the two guns that he used in the shooting, a rifle and a 9mm handgun. The rifle had been modified, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
The unemployed former home inspector from Belleville, Illinois, was known to have anger management issues, was running out of money and on prescription medication before the attack, Slater said.
"It's our hope that the unity that was displayed that evening can maybe continue to grow and thrive between Republicans and Democrats". When he was told it was the Republican team he remained in the area.
Investigators also found a laptop, a cell phone and a digital camera in Hodgkinson's vehicle. Hodgkinson kept the rifle and the handgun, which he bought legally after the 2016 presidential election, in a storage locker near the field. For years he'd ranted about their tax plans on social media and in letters to newspapers. The shooter died in a hospital the same day.
Scalise, who was shot in the hip, was at "imminent risk of death" when arrived at D.C. MedStar Washington Hospital Center, doctors said last week.
U.S. Capitol Police special agents and officers from Alexandria returned fire, killing the gunman. Another U.S. Capitol Police officer was struck by shrapnel and Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, injured his ankle while helping others take cover.
Scalise was the most seriously injured in the attack. The bullet pierced his pelvis, fracturing bones and injuring internal organs. He declined to say whether the people on the list were Republicans or at the baseball practice.
The bill was a rare Trump initiative that received Democratic support. "It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".
