A Towering Inferno: First Critical Reviews Slam 'The Dark Tower' Movie Adaptation

Friday, 04 Aug, 2017

With the sheer volume of movies, miniseries, and TV series adapted from the works of King, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Hollywood told the tale The Dark Tower in some way, shape, or form.

The Dark tower is an American science-fiction-western film. Or, at least, the hope. While Stephen King's It, which was a single book once became a miniseries, Stephen King's novel series, which was 30 years in the making became a single movie. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.

The Dark Tower introduces Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a troubled 11-year-old who dreams of a villainous Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), a heroic Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and a tower that protects his world from darkness and fire. A free-associative epic that brings in elements of fantasy, science fiction and cowboy mythology, "The Dark Tower" is King's version of "Ulysses" or "Gravity's Rainbow", a work of hugely complicated symbolism that, in the end, will always resonate most strongly for its author.

After much anticipation, Sony Pictures had announced in 2015 that they are developing a film on King's popular series of novels and also planning for a TV series.

Can Jake and the last gunslinger prevail, or will they will be overwhelmed by the malevolence of the Man in Black?

He soon finds a portal to Mid-World, where Roland lives, and encounters him in a desert. You're not thinking about the name, right?' he continued.

There he quickly runs into Roland, the stone-faced, duster-wearing gunslinger with a six-shooter in a land with minimal guns or bullets. "We're gonna be the first to present you The Dark Tower.' And if it's a success, we can come back and do another one".

This isn't to say the movie isn't enjoyable to watch, because it is - Idris Elba and Tom Taylor have a wonderful dynamic together, and the gunslinging action scenes are appropriately cool.

The Luther star also had high praise for his co-star Matthew McConaughey, who plays The Man In Black.

In this area, the movie has a hard time setting itself apart; despite all the Stephen King easter eggs, at times it feels more like somebody took the Western-futuristic aesthetic of Firefly, blended it together with the sorcery and demons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and slapped some Stargates in for good measure.

Nothing is really explained or delved into including the Tower itself, which is so important to the overall story. As first reported by Variety, the movie apparently performed so poorly in early test screenings that Sony execs were looking to replace director Nikolaj Arcel.

He isn't done any huge favors by his visual effects team - one effect is surprisingly bad for a mainstream movie in 2017 - and the script by him and three others is largely unengaging.

What exactly is The Dark Tower series? However, no network has picked up the show, and the movie most likely will need to be a hit at the box office for any to do so. Universal planned to turn the books into both a movie and television series.
