On Thursday morning, they raided his father-in-law's house and his property in Delhi.

The Income Tax (IT) department recovered Rs 5 crore in cash while raiding the Delhi residence of the minister.

The officials said a total of 39 premises of Shivakumar and his family are being raided by a team of about 120 personnel from the department with the aid of central paramilitary forces. The Congress raised the issue in parliament, forcing multiple adjournments in the upper house, and the BJP of carrying out "an unprecedented witch-hunt".

The teams early Wednesday raided the deluxe suite of the Minister at the Eagleton Resort at Bidadi, about 40km from here, where he was staying to host 44 Congress lawmakers from Gujarat. "Instead, if such raids are conducted with political vengeance, people will teach lesson in the days to come", Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had added. "But the timing and intention they have chosen is not correct, that too when Gujarat MLAs are staying here and the officials have even raided their rooms", Siddaramaiah told newsmen here. "The Congress had 57 members and support of four others, but they (BJP) broke away five members", Kharge alleged.

Though the IT Department remained mum on the raids at several locations, informed sources said the searches led to recovery of many incriminating documents, property records, cash, gold and jewellery valued at Rs 15 crore. When asked again about the raids he said, "I have no idea about the number of places raids were held, or things seized".

For the Gujarat Congress MLAs holed up in the Bengaluru resort to deter defection, home-food is a major missing point.

The Congress party has alleged that the IT investigations were politically motivated to target the minister for sheltering the Gujarat Congress MLAs.

"This raid should not be linked with any Gujarat poll, this is on a purely economic offence", said Jaitley. Certain investments linked to him in Singapore and few other foreign locations are also under the scanner of the department, they said.

Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in a series of tweets has accused the BJP of a "witch hunt just to win one Rajya Sabha seat".

Minister Shiv Kumar, a Congress heavy weight of Karnataka who will be crucial for the party in the coming Assembly elections, has meanwhile been "taken away" by IT officials.
