Also wounded were Spann's wife, Peggy, 65, William and Marlene Jenkins, 83 and 84, respectively, Linda Bush, 68, and Katherine Dickerson, 64. Joey is listed in critical condition at Vanderbilt. New Beautiful Gate Pastor Michael Mosby said he is neighbors with Spann.

Prior to the Sunday's attack, Samson reportedly made several freaky posts on social media.

The young usher, who said he has attended the church since he was a small child, does not consider himself a hero. He's also a high school and middle school basketball coach.

At around 11:15 a.m., police began receiving calls that multiple shots were fired with people shot at the church, a dispatcher told the Tennessean, part of USA Today Network.

According to police, the woman was found dead in the parking lot while six others were shot.

"He has all their feelings at heart", said Rheta Engle, 69.

25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson is originally from Khartoum, Sudan and legally immigrated to the United States in the 1990s. That's when he forced Samson to the ground until authorities arrived. Samson had a Tennessee driver's license.

A church usher, Caleb Engle, 22, confronted the gunman and was "pistol whipped", Aaron said. Churchgoers said Samson used to attend Burnette Chapel Church of Christ more than a year ago, but officials are still piecing together what motivated the suspect to carry out this deadly rampage.

Police pinged Samson's phone in an attempt to locate him, according to the report, but it's unclear if contact was ever made.

Police later recovered another pistol and a shotgun from the suspect's vehicle.

But less than three months earlier, on June 27, 2017, Murfreesboro police responded to a call from his father, Vanansio Samson, that Emanuel was having suicidal thoughts.

"There are certain things that have come to our attention that are under investigation, but that remains to be announced", Aaron said.

Aaron says the gunman arrived in the parking lot as services were being let out Sunday at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. She was a caring woman who loved God, according to her daughter Breanna. The alleged gunman confessed to shooting at the building during an interview with police.

Law enforcement continues their investigation around the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ on September 24, 2017, in Antioch, Tennessee. When he returned, Engle put his gun on Samson and held him down with his foot, Ramey said.

Rosa says without the usher, the situation "could be worse".
