Trump says USA must 'wipe out' Puerto Rico debt

Trump's comments did not go over well with some US lawmakers. He also noted that Trump didn't tell jokes about Texas and Florida after their hurricanes.

Still, he said, that was enough to keep the power on, and the nursery did not "have to worry about trees falling on the power lines".

The mayor has been a prominent figure since Hurricane Maria started barreling toward Puerto Rico. "That's your job as President".

"The Punta Santiago fishing pier, about a half-mile away and which had survived so many hurricanes before it, was now - quite literally - in Mom's back yard", he wrote in an email updating his friends and family on the USA mainland.

Trump offered no details Tuesday on how he would "wipe out" that debt. "He didn't play politics at all", he said of the governor, making clear that he considers those who have criticized him to be politically driven.

Her top had nothing to do with the Janet Jackson 1986 song but with our president, Donald J. Trump. "We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency", she said, directing her statements to the USA government.

"There's a lot of love in this room, a lot of love", Trump said.

"Sometimes his style of communication gets in the way", Cruz said of Trump's comment. Less than 25% of Puerto Rican debt is held by hedge funds, according to estimates by Cate Long, founder of research firm Puerto Rico Clearinghouse.

And what was the president's response to this obviously desperate situation?

Some analysts found Trump less than empathetic.

Later in the evening, the governor revised the death toll to 34. "When someone is bothered by someone claiming lack of drinking water, lack of medicine for the sick and lack of food for the hungry, that person has problems too deep to be explained in an interview". To borrow a favorite descriptor from the president's incessant tweeting, that's sad.

There will be time for the administration to take credit for Puerto Rico's return to normalcy.

Just days after Hurricane Harvey struck Texas on August 25, the White House announced a massive infusion of federal dollars to help quicken the recovery of Houston and other areas.

"He wanted us to be here in the U.S. Virgin Islands to say very plainly and simply we are with you today, we will be with you tomorrow, we will be with you every day until the U.S. Virgin Islands comes all the way back", Pence told local officials.

Trump also has meetings planned with Gov. Rosselló, as well as members of the US military who are leading the relief efforts. That sends a message that we, the Puerto Rican diaspora, have to put pressure on the administration to provide the aid that's needed in a more rapid manner. "It's been wonderful, what's been done in a short period of time on Puerto Rico", he told reporters at the White House.

President Trump on Tuesday raised the prospect of wiping out hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico's crushing debt load.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz arrives at the San Francisco hospital during the evacuation of patients after an electrical plant failure, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017.

Trump this weekend accused Cruz of "poor leadership" over Twitter and said she was taking instructions from Democrats that she "be nasty Trump".

"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort", he added, scoffing at "politically motivated ingrates" who had criticized the federal work, and insisting that "tremendous progress" was being made. The US President described his tour as "great" but also took the opportunity slammed the media for "negative" coverage.

"This is a time when everyone shows their true colors", Cruz said. There was no exchange with anybody, none of the mayors and in fact, this bad and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people.

Another option: the Justice Department becomes a party to the bankruptcy, which would give the White House the chance to directly influence a final restructuring plan of the island's debt load and what Wall Street creditors get repaid.

A week later, Trump publicly tuned in to Maria's aftermath.

After the violent white supremacist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump blamed "both sides". In reality it seems as though Trump refers to any woman who he is afraid of or intimidated by as a "nasty" woman.

We hope that Trump similarly will come around to a recognition of the need to unite the country after disaster strikes, and that he will make his intentions plain in that regard when he addresses his fellow citizens in Puerto Rico tomorrow.

Being a party to the case would simply mean that the USA could participate in hearings and file motions supporting or opposing any of the dozens of legal fights that will need to be resolved before Puerto Rico can exit bankruptcy.
