Thinking About Surface Book 2 Specs and Configurations

Wednesday, 18 Oct, 2017

Microsoft has unveiled the second generation of its convertible laptop/tablet Surface Book - pitching it as twice as powerful as an Apple MacBook Pro.

The 15in Surface Book 2 is positioned as a high-end machine and comes with 8th gen Core i7 CPU with 256GB to 1TB SSD configurations and all iterations ship with 16GB of RAM (32GB is not now offered). Microsoft compares its new Surface Book 2 with the latest MacBook Pro in the announcement. The design has been updated in small ways, such as in the way the hinge works and the keyboard, which makes it work a bit better.

The Surface Book 2 will be "twice as powerful as the new MacBook Pro", said Yusuf Mehdi, the corporate vice president who oversees Windows and Device marketing.

For those having trouble keeping track of the increasingly crowded Surface line (can't say I blame you), the Book is the company's first full-fledged laptop (whereas other models have been positioned as convertible tablets).

"The 13" model of the Surface Book 2 sticks with a dual-core Kaby Lake Core i5-7300U CPU, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM as its base option.

In addition, the two configurations feature really impressive graphics with its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 discrete GPU that comes with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory.

Consumers will get up to 16GB RAM options and up to 1 terabyte of solid storage option. For the time being, it's certainly nice to see everything from USB-A to USB-C (finally!) and a full-size SD card reader squeezed onto the razor-thin Surface Book 2 profile. Surface Precision Mouse gives you more multi-tasking power by allowing you to work seamlessly across up to three computers.2 Supports both Bluetooth and wired USB connections.

Prices start at $1,499 for the 13.5-inch Book and $2,499 for the 15-inch. The pre-orders start from November 6th and the shipping will take place from November 16th.

At a starting price of $1,499, the Surface Book 2 is Microsoft's most-expensive laptop. We'll have to wait to see how the actual battery life does in testing, but it's hard to not get excited by what Microsoft is claiming here.

With that extra performance that comes from the GTX 1060, Microsoft says that the 15-inch Book 2 is five times more powerful than the original Surface Book.

The Surface Book 2 will run the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update out of the box, which is also available for all Windows 10 users to download and install. It's larger, but shares the same proportions as the 13.5-inch model, and uses the same overall design cues as previous Surface Books, including the mirror finish on the square Windows logo on its lid.

The exterior of the Surface Book 2, aside from the ports, is almost identical to original Surface Book. Preorders begin November 9 in the US and some other markets, with deliveries starting on November 16.
