Flu season is here: Have you gotten your vaccination?

Friday, 27 Oct, 2017

Babies and young children, people over age 65 and people with other health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes, are most at risk from complications from the flu.

IPSWICH children are now eligible for a free flu vaccine.

As we continue into the Fall season temperatures are beginning to drop here in the Brazos Valley, and this seasonal change doesn't just bring with it cooler climates but also the start of cold and flu season.

After the worst flu season in recent years, the Queensland Government has announced up to 300,000 children across Queensland would be eligible for a free flu vaccination next year.

Flu symptoms come on suddenly, and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches and body aches, chills, and fatigue.

It's that time of year again time to get that flu shot if you haven't already.

The flu kills more people than any other vaccine-preventable illness, sending about 12,200 people to hospital and causing 3,500 deaths across Canada each year.

The flu shot is available from a doctor or nurse practitioner, and at participating pharmacies and local public health units across the province, including the health unit on Terrace Hill Street.

Locally, flu activity this year has been described as sporadic, however, state epidemiologist Zack Moore, MD, says the number of cases should begin to increase in the coming weeks. "Flu vaccination is the single best way to protect you, your family, and the most vulnerable community members, such as those residing in long-term care facilities, from flu and its complications". The illness can spread from person to person through breathing, coughing and sneezing. Throw away the tissue and wash your hands. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

To avoid the spread of these germs, Dr. Brahmbhatt added that cleaning your phone daily with a cloth and anti-viral cleanser will help keep you healthy on and off of the toilet.
