Gareth Southgate says England 'not at the same stage' as Germany

Abraham's first real sight of goal so almost led to the opener as England ended the first half on the front foot, but a deflected effort looped just wide.

Media reports this morning are suggesting that academy product Jordan Pickford is set to make his senior England debut tonight.

Higginbotham told Premier League Daily: "I know there have been a lot of players that have dropped out for injury and whatever reason".

The England side against the World Cup holders could be the most inexperienced for 41 years with a possible starting lineup of players with 101 caps.

"This is a young group but they're switched on". "Then we'll have a look and just assess what is required".

Tammy Abraham proved a handful during his first 60 minutes of global football and man of the match Ruben Loftus-Cheek flourished under the Wembley floodlights, as did fellow debutant Pickford.

The big midfielder took the calm, nearly casual approach that Chelsea did not consider good enough to give him more than occasional opportunities, on to the worldwide stage.

"Maybe they had another level to go to, but I think everyone knows what we are missing as well".

The 21-year-old midfielder, now on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea, earned his first senior call-up for the upcoming friendlies along with Tammy Abraham and Joe Gomez.

Germany played England in a football friendly earlier this year in Dortmund.

"Second half, we were tactically a bit better without the ball and didn't concede so many chances". England qualified easily in a campaign that saw a managerial change and more than 40 players tried out in a whole host of different formations as Gareth Southgate continues to search for that winning formula that will finally end 51 years of hurt.
