Star Wars Battlefront launched just as Star Wars fever was peaking for the release of Episode VII, and now Battlefront II is set to drop in a few days.
The Star Wars Battlefront franchise originally launched in 2004, and the reboot for modern consoles came in April 2015, once again giving players the opportunity to take part in the beloved franchise with updated graphics. The story covered the outrage sweeping across the 'net regarding the game's increasingly controversial loot boxes and the notion that heroes - that's Darth Vader and the other powerful, named characters - would be locked behind huge in-game currency costs. In response to this massive amount of criticism, all major heroes and villians will have their prices slashed by 75%. DICE seems to be taking what fans want under big consideration and that's why the game will undergo several changes until it reaches the players' expectations.
"Based on what we've seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players", Wasilczyk said.
It takes something pretty special to create the most downvoted comment in Reddit history, and game developer EA has discovered that annoying Star Wars gamers certainly doesn't help. To explain his calculations, the Redditor posted a spreadsheet showing how many credits you would receive if you complete all the challenges in Battlefront 2. That' sounds 20-hours to unlock both heroes. But not only is this loot box system now one of the more pernicious examples of microtransactions in a triple-A game, it also sullies elements of the game it's shoved into, making it both an ill-advised decision from a game design perspective along with it arguably being both anti-consumer and predatory. Even though EA has tweaked this aspect since the backlash, players on Reddit are still complaining about paywalled features of the game.
What do you make of all this change? Battlefront II costs between $60 and $80, depending on the version you choose.
