Notre Dame Men's Basketball won 67-66 against the Wichita State Shockers to earn their sixth win of the season. Marquette showed in the first half it can play with one of the top teams in the country.
Notre Dame (9-2) is going for win No. 10 on the season when they travel to face rival Stanford (8-3) on November 25 in a primetime matchup on ABC.
On November 30th, Notre Dame will face Number Four Michigan State at seven p.m. They were smoothly efficient offensively, making extra passes, finding the open man, knocking down shots.
Now it's on to the Shockers and a chance to become Maui champions.
Wichita State has multiple players who can score in many ways, its lineup filled with nearly interchangeable parts. Duop Reath led LSU with 17 points.
Wichita State outshone Notre Dame throughout the first half, making the Irish look exhausted and uneventful. "We have great scorers on our team and we have great guys that can shoot the ball".
LSU's Tremont Waters had 39 points on 13-for-22 shooting from the field and 5-for-11 shooting from deep. The talented freshman point guard had 21 points and set up the go-ahead basket with a spectacular over-the-shoulder, no-look assist from his knees. The Tigers came no closer than seven points the rest of the night. Sampson rolled his ankle badly and had to be helped from the court by LSU trainer Shawn Eddy.
The Irish took advantage, scoring at the rim and the 3-point arc during a 15-2 run that put them up 25-10. Marti (Geben) was battling all game, rebounding.
Halftime-Wichita St. 37-23. 3-Point Goals-Wichita St. 8-23 (Z.Brown 4-5, Willis 2-3, Frankamp 2-7, Reaves 0-1, Haynes-Jones 0-1, Nurger 0-2, Shamet 0-4), Notre Dame 4-12 (Farrell 2-4, Gibbs 1-1, Colson 1-4, Pflueger 0-1, Harvey 0-1, Mooney 0-1).
Going forward, the Irish should be able to defend their way to victory. "They shoot it, they're poised, they play with unbelievable pace". "Tonight we didn't. So that's why you see the box score looking like it did".
Waters had a superb game against MI, but found the going a bit tougher against Notre Dame's length and athleticism.
Rowsey scored 30 points, including a 16-for-16 performance from the foul line, and Hauser finished with 20 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Golden Eagles (3-2), who bounced back from a loss to No. 6 Wichita State.
ABOUT NOTRE DAME (5-0): LSU entered Tuesday's matchup riding high following a 77-75 win over MI, but the Tigers fell behind early and were outclassed by the Fighting Irish, who shot 51.6 percent from the field and 15-of-32 from 3-point range.
Wichita State has dominated its two tournament games despite shooting 12-of-44 from 3-point range, and that figure may need to improve to keep pace with a Notre Dame team averaging 10 made 3-pointers per game. That's where Marquette's Sam Hauser got hot from early.
