Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump have a "very good relationship", the United States president suggested last night, in remarks that appeared to signal a new openness to diplomacy with North Korea.

Talking about Pongyang's nuclear and missile programmes today, the Russian President said: "I think that Mr Kim Jong-un has obviously won this round".

'You'll see that a lot with me.

Okay, having made clear how easy it is to misjudge the future, immediate or long-range, on the Korean Peninsula, I'll go out on a limb and predict the Games will go off without much of a hitch.

Sometimes diplomacy is the art of going in two directions at once, and the Trump administration seems to have chosen that sweet spot of ambiguity, for now, in managing its continuing confrontation with North Korea. The North may offer a different formula, but Washington probably won't care so long as the other side shows up.

Asked whether he has spoken with the North Korean leader, Trump told the newspaper: "I don't want to comment on it". -South Korean military exercises, and perhaps turning a blind eye to possible violations of United Nations sanctions to accommodate the participants.

They also expressed that South Korean officials should capitalize on this opportunity to push denuclearization talks forward. A pre-emptive US attack could provoke a devastating retaliation by North Korea against the South, whose capital Seoul lies with the range of North Korean artillery and rockets. "It is very deplorable to see the United States politicians boasting of their diplomatic failure as 'diplomatic success,"' it said.

The Kremlin strongman congratulated the North Korean dictator, saying he had won the latest stand-off with the US and South Korea. "If North Korea engages in provocations again or does not show sincerity in resolving this issue, the global community will continue applying strong pressure and sanctions".
