'The Shape of Water' leads race for 2018 Oscars

Wednesday, 24 Jan, 2018

Here are a few notable surprises from this year's announcements.

Jordan Peele's socially conscious horror/thriller got noms for Best Director, Lead Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Original Screenplay, and Best Picture!

Del Toro isn't sure what changed in the minds of Oscar voters but believes recognition for the genre is overdue.

As it turns out, they could.

Oscars So White will remain a continuing conversation, but responding to calls for racial and gender equality, the list stands alongside 2017's as one of the more exciting in recent memory.

Then Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri began winning some major awards, especially the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Drama, and the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, making it a putative frontrunner.

Women in Hollywood felt some long overdue love on Tuesday when Oscar nominations rained in for movies about their stories and for the actresses and directors who bring them to life.

While Franco won't be in the running to win Best Actor, it'll be a tight race anyway with Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis and Daniel Kaluuya, Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington all nominated.

If he wins for his work on the film, which was also nominated for best picture, he would become the first black director to win the award. Peele and Gerwig also saw nominations for the screenplays for their films. Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani are up for a screenwriting Oscar for telling their story in The Big Sick. Although it shouldn't be, I suppose, considering how its predecessor The LEGO Movie was also snubbed in this category.

In the best actress category, Hawkins has competition from Frances McDormand ("Three Billboards"), Margot Robbie ("I, Tonya"), Saoirse Ronan ("Lady Bird") and Meryl Streep ("The Post").

Now, the focus shifts to the March 5 ceremony and the role it has in keeping the momentum from the #MeToo movement. Similarly Wiseau, who believed the 2004 cult classic that inspired the film was such a masterpiece that he screened The Room in the window for Oscar consideration, will see his Academy Awards dreams dashed.

"It feels surreal. I never thought that this would ever happen".

Martin McDonagh, the writer-director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, missed out in the directing category - although he was recognised for the film's original screenplay.

The winners speak volumes of the world we live in. "Guardians of the Galaxy" received its aforementioned bids for Makeup/Hair-styling and Visual Effects, "Big Hero 6" won Best Animated Feature, and both "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" helped fill out the Visual Effects category.

Approaching the final category - best picture - Haddish asked Serkis if he wanted to announce it.

And don't forget Lady Bird, with its nuanced mother-daughter relationship and self-confident central character. I am so proud of this film - it has been an unbelievable journey for any movie, let alone a horror film that came out a year ago. "Its specialty label, Fox Searchlight, is behind both "Three Billboards" and "The Shape of Water", and Fox released The Post".

"If Hollywood kept statistics for the most assists in nominations/awards".
