Trump chief of staff 'shocked' as aide resigns over domestic abuse claims

In a statement, Porter said "these outrageous allegations are simply false", adding he "took the photos given to the media almost 15 years ago and the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described".

The woman, Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, spoke out after saying he had on one occasion dragged her wet and naked out of a shower during an argument.

Porter's ex-wife, Jennie Willoughby, is speaking out on-camera for the first time, telling The Washington Post the abuse began on their honeymoon in 2009 and escalated right after their one-year anniversary.

Jennifer Willoughby who is Porter's second wife, recounted the abuse to Daily Mail earlier this week.

Kelly issued a starkly different statement on Wednesday after Porter resigned and further details emerged in The Intercept, including photos of a black eye Holderness said Porter gave her.

Porter, a Rhodes scholar and Harvard-educated lawyer, served as the staff secretary in Trump's White House. He helped craft Trump's well-received State of the Union address and was credited internally for helping bridge divides in a White House riven by rivalries and for helping more effectively roll out new policy.

White House chief of staff John Kelly said Porter had "true integrity and honor".

Despite the claims, Mr Porter's career in the White House continued to prosper.

Porter functioned as Kelly's top enforcer in their shared mission to instill discipline and order in what had become an extraordinarily chaotic West Wing.

Less than 24 hours later, Hatch told reporters, "I am heartbroken by today's allegations".

"I was shocked by the new allegations released today against Rob Porter", Kelly said. He claimed late Wednesday night that he was "shocked" by the allegations - which the White House had known about generally since late previous year - and added, "There is no place for domestic violence in our society".

"It's clear now that those expectations everybody had that Kelly would somehow be the grown-up in the room, a moderating force who would smooth the rough edges off of Trump, were just completely unrealistic", Whipple told The Post. Both of Porter's ex-wives have said they detailed their allegations to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in January as part of the security clearance review. She took out the protective order against him in after he allegedly violated a separation agreement and punched through glass in the door of their home, cutting himself. "I've got full confidence in Gen. Kelly".

Keilar pointed to CNN's and Politico's reporting indicating that Kelly had known about the abuse for some time.

He claimed that Gowdy and other Republican members have previously blocked efforts to obtain information related to White House security clearances.

Porter had worked as chief of staff for Sen. Rob Portman of OH and Mike Lee of Utah. I asked its spokesman for reaction to the Porter issue. "What he's done as chief of staff doesn't undo what he did as a heroic war figure, but it diminishes him as a person, and that's regrettable". "I didn't go the police because I was scared, I was in Italy alone and I didn't know what to do". The reason for it was because this man has been accused of domestic violence by both of his ex-wives.

It is noteworthy that, according to the Partnership for Public Service, the administration has not nominated anyone as the Justice Department's director for the office of violence against women.
