White House Aide Resigns After Ex-Wives Claim Domestic Abuse

He is the gatekeeper to the Oval Office, determining which articles and policy proposals fall into President Donald Trump's hands and pre-screening the briefing materials that his visitors share with him. He was upset when shown reports of the abuse, which first emerged on Tuesday.

Porter added that he was grateful for the opportunity to serve in the Trump administration.

Sarah Sanders announces Porter's resignation from the podium. Prior to working in the White House, Porter served as Hatch's chief of staff. No action was taken to remove him from the staff. It wasn't until last week that Kelly knew he had been twice married, this official said.

As first reported by the Daily Mail, in April of a year ago, Porter's most recent ex-wife, Jennie Willoughby, wrote a blog post entitled, "Why I Stayed". Hatch still described his interactions with Porter as "professional" and "respectful" but said "domestic violence in any form is abhorrent". "I accepted his resignation earlier today, and will ensure a swift and orderly transition".

In a statement confirming his departure, Porter denied the allegations. Though he stepped down, Porter denied the contents of the report, saying, "I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign".

One statement offered a strong defense of Porter, while another was less robust and carried a sharply different tone as Porter faces allegations of abuse from his two former wives.

When the Daily Mail approached Hatch for comment on the Porter allegations, Hatch berated the outlet for publishing the claims and praised Porter as "kind and considerate" and "principled".

Senior staff and press staff were meeting throughout the day on the matter, White House sources said. "If I could find more people like him I would hire them, I think that's how good he is".

He dramatically changed his tune on Wednesday after Porter resigned.

More recently, Hatch defended Trump's endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, who was accused of sexual abuse by a number of women, some of whom were teenagers when Moore was in his 30's.

Both Politico and Vanity Fair allege that Kelly knew about Porter's past transgressions. (I found out years later he had kicked his first wife on theirs.) A month later he physically prevented me from leaving the house.

His first spouse, Ms Holderness, said the White House aide had been verbally and physically abusive.

Because of his connection to Trump, the White House hoped to fight the charges and keep Porter.

Axios reported that Porter was not pressured to resign. Porter reportedly refused to leave Willoughby's apartment some time in 2010.

It remains unclear when he will officially depart the White House. Rob Porter has been effective in his role as Staff Secretary.

Porter has quite the prestigious legal résumé.

Porter's role was under-the-radar, and Trump himself remained largely unfamiliar with him for weeks before his role was explained. Porter reviewed all documents before reaching the president's desk. The information was reportedly passed on to the White House. "And the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described".
