And they kept up during an early and absentee voting period that saw an unnaturally high turnout for a special election, besting Democrats as a party by almost 200 votes. Annette Taddeo of Miami.

"Democratic candidate Dave Shapiro has already hit the ground running in the race for Congress, and will be a very strong competitor in November".

"The voters have spoken", Good said. "People in District 72 want leaders who listen and act boldly to better our community".

According to the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections office, the race appeared to set a record for voter turnout for a special election in Florida even before Election Day. More than 44,000 voters were cast, representing 36% of the total electorate. Big names on both sides offered up endorsements, including former Vice President Joe Biden for Good and Gov. Rick Scott and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio for Buchanan. Democratic gubernatorial candidates Chris King and Andrew Gillum also campaigned on her behalf. "If this was a race where she won because Democrats outnumbered Republicans, that would be one thing". But that edge has fallen from 13 percentage points previous year.

"This should put all Republicans on notice that it could be a very hard year, if youre an incumbent, to survive", said Rep. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, chairman of the Republican Party of Sarasota and an enthusiastic supporter of the president. Good's election came with little more than three weeks left in the regular legislative session, which is scheduled to end March 9.

Despite the low literal stakes of the election - a nine-month term in a chamber of the Florida Legislature where Republicans hold a near super-majority - Republicans and Democrats treated the Sarasota district like a proxy for the midterm congressional elections. Thirty-six percent of registered voters showed up to vote.

"Let me just say this, you guys have an election on Tuesday", Lewandowski told a crowd of about 200, according to the Herald-Tribune.

Trump touted the decisions of dozens of companies to invest more in their workers-in the form of bonuses, higher wages, and other benefits-due to the Republican tax plan, before again criticizing Democrats for not supporting the overhaul. "Good only lost election day by around 100 votes, yet Republicans outpaced Democrats by 16 points on election day".

But it was ultimately not enough to pull off a Republican win.

The main split in the new poll comes among independents, with 26 percent favoring a Democratic candidate and 25 percent selecting a Republican.

House District 72 leans Republican.

However, some Republicans view Buchanan's underperformance as more of a repudiation of GOP extremism than a Democratic uprising.
