Top Australian cricketers seen regularly on Australian television commercials promoting products - long after they retired from playing for their country - include batting greats Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Mark Taylor, legendary former fast bowler Dennis Lillee, and spinning great Shane Warne.
The troika now faces significant sanctions and have been sent back to Australia.The decision was expected especially after the rage against the three players and Australian team across the globe.
In 2013, three players from the Rajasthan franchise - which Smith was signed to - were arrested for spot-fixing, and the Chennai and Rajasthan teams were suspended from the league.
"The CoA, in consultation with BCCI acting president CK Khanna, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla and BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, has chose to ban Smith and Warner with immediate effect from participation in IPL 2018", the BCCI said in a media release.
"In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain", Sunrisers chief executive K.Shanmugam said. During auctions, SRH's big-budget signing was Manish Pandey (Rs 11 crore) and also added performers like Shakib Al Hasan and Carlos Brathwaite.
"These are significant penalties for professional players and the Board does not impose them lightly".
Sources close to Warner, however, deny that he was the instigator. Where Smith is concerned, the Royals took the decision after consulting with the BCCI.
Meanwhile, Smith's ban was based on his knowing of the plan but failing to take steps to stop it. Smith has admitted a pre-meditated attempt to alter the condition of the ball during Australia's third Test in Cape Town. When Bancroft spoke to the umpires, he was shown holding a bigger, black cloth rather than the small yellow object he had earlier seemed to place down his pants.
Tim Paine was officially declared as the 46 Test captain for the national side, on Wednesday morning.
