With Kyrie Irving injured, Boston Celtics plan adjustments for National Basketball Association playoffs

Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving (knee) will miss the rest of the regular season and postseason, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

In an effort to remove bacteria in his knee, Irving will undergo surgery on Saturday to remove the screws that were installed when he fractured his kneecap during the 2015 NBA Finals.

This latest news isn't surprising considering the tight recovery window Irving faced. At this point, just having Irving ready for some of the offseason and the preseason seems like it will be the bigger priority, and it also eases any pressure on Hayward to make a miraculous return for the playoffs, though that was never likely.

"The hardest thing to do sometimes is accept the uncontrollable things life throws at you", Irving wrote. Then Kyrie Irving ended up being as good as advertised and the Celtics still looked like a championship caliber team.

Gibson had one other stint in the National Basketball Association - in 2016, he played 17 games for the Dallas Mavericks, posting 6.2 points per game in 13 minutes. It's simply a test of your perseverance and Will, to be present, even in the wake of what's going on. Irving recently developed an infection at the site of the screws, and now they must be taken out.

But there's a ceiling without Kyrie Irving, who was ruled out for the remainder of the postseason Thursday.

In the upcoming surgery, two screws will be removed. Other possible first-round foes include Miami and Milwaukee, with the Indiana Pacers a possible but unlikely considering they need to win just one of their last four games to finish with a playoff seeding no worst than No. 5. Remember when Isaiah Thomas and Kelly Olynyk combined for 55 points in Game 7?

Compounding the issue, the Celtics will be woefully short on traditional ball-handlers without Irving and Marcus Smart - creating the sort of position deficiency which feeds right into the long-limbed Bucks' penchant for turning deflected passes into bone-crushing transition attack. And when you do, please give it a five-star rating and review. That said, Horford has to be one of Boston's most impactful players whether it's scoring, rebounding, defense or getting shots for his teammates.

Brad Stevens' team lack offensive efficiency without Irving as the former Cleveland Cavaliers star's 24.4 points per game average is 10 better than the next highest scorer in the Celtics team. In his Instagram post, he implied he would be in attendance for Boston's impending first-round playoff series. Irving's injury, while unfortunate, has allowed Boston to showcase its role players to potential suitors.
