Knightdale Police investigate infant death, parents are father and daughter

Katie Pladl gave birth to her son in September a year ago.

The incest charges could have put both Steven and Katie Pladl in prison for up to 10 years. Authorities in three states are working together to unravel the chain of events.

Police said the body of Steven Pladl was found shortly afterward in NY. After the gruesome murders, he drove across the state line to Dover, New York, where he ultimately killed himself. According to police, Steven then told his mother that he had killed Bennett and left him inside the home.

Anthony Fusco adopted Katie in 1998. The slain infant had been born of the relationship between Steven Pladl and his daughter, Katie. Katie lived with the family, including two younger sisters, at a home on Locustgrove Court in Henrico's West End. She told police when she requested the welfare check that she was concerned over comments her son had just made to her on the phone.

The middle child further wrote, "Katie is pregnant". That's where she says she fell in love with her dad.

The caller says the victim's vehicle was at a stop sign when the gunman, in a blue minivan, drove around two other cars, pulled alongside it and fired into the truck and then fled. He said Katie had been living in NY with her adoptive parents.

"It is very unlikely this case was going to trial", Friedman said. She said she believed Steven brainwashed and manipulated Katie.

"This is a tragedy for everyone involved".

In that 911 call, obtained by WNCN, Steven's mother told the dispatcher her son said he had killed the baby. She blames Steven for brainwashing and seducing Katie.

Steven was released on bond and ordered to remain in Virginia pending trial and to make no contact with Katie.

Alyssa, who was horrified, said she thought it was his way of informing her of the incestuous affair. Within weeks, Katie meets her biological parents.

Before Katie moved into Alyssa and Steven's Henrico home, she lived in NY with her adoptive parents, Kelly and Anthony Fusco. Alyssa leaves the house, and Steven starts sleeping on the floor of Katie's room.

In March 2017, Steven presented Alyssa with the journal and said the 11-year-old was "acting out". Authorities interview the estranged couple's two remaining daughters.

Steven Pladl was said to be still living in the home on Earlston Court.

They were located in January 2018 in Kightdale, N.C. and taken into custody. The child will be handed back to her 35-year-old mother while Social Work Services will oversee and give assistance. In the vehicle, troopers found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The mother then called the girl's father who lived at an apartment across the street.

Police in Knightdale received a call about 9 a.m. from Pladl's mother to conduct a welfare check at a home on Earlston Court in Knightdale, where Pladl and his daughter lived before their January 27 arrest on warrants issued from Henrico police.
