Golden Knights top Jets 3-1, tie up Western Conference finals

Thursday, 17 May, 2018

The Jets' offensive attack attempted 32.4 shots per game in the regular season, leading to 3.4 goals per outing (ranked second overall in the NHL).

Tomas Tatar scored 6 minutes, 37 seconds into the game for the Golden Knights, and Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 30 saves.

Perhaps the biggest difference between game 1 and game 2 for the Golden Knights was how they dealt with the Jets' defense.

"It's nuts", said Shunock.

Social media personalities Justin Reves and Greg Moore met with the Vegas mascot to pick up the swag, which they plan to deliver in person.

But that still can't compete with a Canadian team still in contention for a Stanley Cup.

"We're playing with house money", said Shunock.

"Yeah, I'm satisfied with my game", he said. Hounding defensemen has worked for them all year, and it's crucial to the Golden Knights' chances to stave off such advances.

"I had an opportunity, I got a ticket and it was a no-brainer to fly down here and take it in", Gobert said.

Born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, Shunock, a graduate of St. Mary's, still comes home at least twice per year.

The expansion Vegas squad quelled doubters in the first round with a sweep of Los Angeles. "It was a great crowd when we were here for sure".

"We just kept running with it - and Vegas loved it", Reves said. He contacted Knights owner Bill Foley. "I was just happy to be able to buy a home and stay there". "My dad (Dr. George Shunock) put a team together to save the Hounds in '88". It seems like when our backs are against the wall, it brings out the best in our group. The committee became known as the "founding 50". But they were good.

"Forty-thousand people with the "Whiteout" in Winnipeg can't be wrong", he said.

Another sloppy aspect of game 1 for the Golden Knights was puck control. He began working with entertainment director Johnny Greco, whose previous gigs included the Cleveland Cavaliers and the WWE, and was hired as host. She grew up in Winnipeg and said she has been a Jets fan 'forever'. During the regular season, Vegas tied for third in the National Hockey League with 29 home wins. It all evens out in the end and with seven games, the best team is usually going to win.

The series switches locations to Las Vegas, which means the Golden Knights have the advantage of the last change after stoppages. But her passion for the team never wavered.

Since that opening game, the Knights have been on a steady rise, and the locals are noticing.

The Winnipeg Jets have struggled at home of late, but they have played well on the road, and they have allowed a total of nine goals in their last five away from home.

The visiting Jets have relied heavily on Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine this year. "They were on the puck and didn't make it easy", said Maurice, per Mitchell Clinton of NHL.com.
