White House Announces Venue for Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore

The US already has about 30,000 forces in South Korea along its border of North Korea.

National Basketball Association star turned Kim Jong Un soulmate Dennis Rodman will be in Singapore during President Trump's summit with the North Korean dictator next week, The Post has learned.

The Capella Hotel, which observers have thrown up as one of the possible venues for the summit or where one of the two leaders will stay, sits within the gazetted portion of the island as do several other luxury hotels. The president also showed unusual politeness, seeing Kim Yong-chol, a former spy chief, off as he departed in a auto.

Analysts say the shake-up allows Kim Jong Un and the ruling party to tighten control over the army and neuter its influence, at a time when North Korea is seeking global engagement, domestic development and a denuclearisation deal with the United States.

Lee said while it is always incredibly hard to read the power dynamics of the North Korean regime from outside the country, Kim was a young leader who had to set up a power base to potentially rule for decades. They held a fifth round of talks Monday.

Kim Yong Hyun, a professor of North Korean studies at Dongguk University in Seoul, said the reported new military leadership brings expertise in military-run economic affairs rather than combat strategies.

According to CNN, Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have clashed in recent weeks on the matter.

Trump said last week he no longer wanted to use the phrase "maximum pressure" to describe the campaign because North Korea was being more cooperative, even though the United States is keeping current sanctions in place. Given this situation, the US government needs to work on the human rights issues in order to conclude treaties requiring congressional approval and promote other matters. The former USA ambassador to the United Nations has been described as one of the most ardent hawks against North Korea, and has received widespread criticism for his approach on dealing with the regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited North Korea earlier this week.

Rodman will arrive in Singapore a day before the planned summit and could play a role in the negotiations, according to The New York Post. "I hope it won't be disrupted, although there are no 100% chances", Lavrov said. "If it's a negative meeting, I'm not happy". It will be the first such dialogue between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.

There is also a chance Kim may have a bilateral summit with Putin.

Writing for Reuters, Wellesley College political science professor Katharine Moon noted that the April salute signaled the military supported Kim's diplomatic thaw with South Korea and the US.

"He's talked about it, but no final trip or plans have been made", he said. Observers point out that this could indicate Putin's interest in holding a summit with Kim and wishing to give some input on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with North Korea's Kim Yong-chol, Trump said that he believes that North Korea is open to denuclearizing quickly.
