Bourdain wrote that he assumed Obama had spent 'more than his share of time in the banquet rooms of major chain hotels, slogging through long state dinners, eating representative menus of "national dishes"'.
"I was in a cranky mood after my last restaurant closed and felt no reason not to tell the truth about a business I both love and have mixed emotions about", Bourdain told CBS2 in 1999.

In an interview with Biography.com in 2016, Bourdain spoke about quitting heroin in the 1980s and whether or not he had a "charmed" life. "But there's been nothing yet", he said.

CNN said in a statement shortly after his death that Anthony had passed away, and his talents as a chef were remarkable.
It wasn't clear whether Anthony and Asia had broken up, but if they did, they hadn't yet made a public announcement.
"Anthony I am so mad at you", Rose tweeted. "You just did the hardest thing in the world", he wrote.
But who knows what was going through Anthony Bourdain's mind in his final moments, other than Bourdain himself.
The 58-year-old actor finished: "You left too soon".
On Friday there were pop-up tributes outside Les Halles, the NY restaurant where Bourdain worked in the 1990s. "We need to see", he tweeted in March 2012.
French authorities have confirmed that Bourdain's method of suicide was by hanging himself with his bathrobe's belt.
Bourdain visited Vietnam on several occasions and recorded a number of programmes about his fascination with the country's food.
