Lions don't select any players in 2018 National Football League supplemental draft

Beal is the most pro-ready player of the three and had he been in the 2018 NFL Draft, he likely would've been ranked among the top cornerbacks in the class.

What is the NFL Supplemental Draft? He had another productive year in 2016, recording 63 tackles and three interceptions.

The Supplemental Draft consists of a handful of players who did not enter April's player selection meeting.

At least two national experts don't expect the Lions to participate in the draft. As an example, if the Browns decide to bid a third-round pick on Western Michigan CB Sam Beal - which is a real possibility - they must be in the first pod where any team bids to select him. The other three players who were eligible - Mississippi State S Brandon Bryant, Grand Valley State RB Marty Carter and Oregon State LB Bright Ugwoegbu - went undrafted and were rendered free agents and immediately able to sign with any interested National Football League team. This combination of awareness and raw athleticism makes Beal an ideal prospect to be joining a team so late in the summer, more than ready for the rigors of training camp. If no other team bids a second-round pick, that team gets the player. Teams will typically spend a lower pick on a supplemental player than they would in a real draft because the player has already missed Minicamp and OTAs and the team will lose a 2019 pick that matches the one they spent on the player.

This means the Broncos stand a pretty good chance of winning a "bid" for a player should they choose to submit one in any given round.

A 6-1, 177-pounder, Beal played three seasons at Western Michigan. Here's a look at the five players - in alphabetical order - and what they could bring to their future pro teams.

I doubt the Dolphins will select any players this year.

The Cleveland Browns have had some success in the supplemental draft.

Bryant reportedly signed with the Jets, per Yahoo Sports.

We had pinpointed Alexander as a possible mid-round target for the Panthers but he wound up going to Washington in the sixth round, per Matt Miller at Bleacher Report.

Beal's experience in both tight man and off man are valuable to teams.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that the Chiefs didn't reach for Beal with a second-round draft pick. But those gambles vanished under former general manager Jerry Reese, who placed a premium on every single draft pick. The third group has all the teams that did make the playoffs. Gordon has been very productive when on the field but has missed huge portions of his career due to off-field issues; he returned to the field a year ago after sitting out almost three seasons.

Is this Sam Beal guy any good?

He made a decision to return to school, but at the start of spring practice he was suspended indefinitely, and later declared for the Supplemental Draft. Longtime Steelers corner William Gay, 33, was signed this offseason, as were other free agent veterans Teddy Williams, Curtis Riley and B.W. Webb.
