New York Yankees acquire Zach Britton from Baltimore Orioles

NY manager Aaron Boone said newly acquired reliever Zach Britton will fill a variety of roles at the back end of the Yankees bullpen but emphasized that Aroldis Chapman's role remains the same. Britton will join a bullpen that already features the likes of Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances, and David Robertson, and one that holds the best ERA (2.75) and strikeout (448) numbers in Major League Baseball.

Now with the Machado trade saga finally over, the Orioles now shift their attention to trading two-time All-Star and 2016 American League Reliver of the Year, Zach Britton.

Britton was drafted by the Orioles in 2006 and worked his way up the team's minor league system before landing in the big leagues in 2011. Because of his experience pitching in a division that this year includes two of the best teams in baseball, Britton believes his transition to the Yankees' bullpen at this important juncture should go smoother than if the Yankees had traded for a reliever unfamiliar with the AL East's nuances.

The Baltimore Orioles caught a bad break last offseason when Zach Britton tore his right Achilles tendon in December while working out, spiking any chance they had to trade their closer with a year remaining on his deal and pushing his 2018 debut back into June. As part of the deal, the Orioles have received three pitching prospects: Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carroll. From 2014-2016, Britton was the definition of a shutdown reliever. Since the offseason the Dodgers have operated to get - and remain - below the $197 million tax threshold in order to reset their penalties.

"It's been a great 12 years", he said. It all happened with this organization, so it will forever be in my heart, and hopefully it's not the last time I play here. "So to be able to come here now and have the fan support behind me is going to be awesome".

And as the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline sits just eight days away, there's a growing number of interest in some of the Orioles' top players. The Orioles hope, eventually, they can turn to a young core of major leaguers to bring them back to the postseason.

The Yankees are now in second place of the American League East with a 63-34 record. He was the fourth overall pick of the Texas Rangers in 2015 before being traded to the Yankees for Carlos Beltrán.

"We're going to continue to evaluate".

"I guess he's probably the headliner, or the most publicized player that we're picking up in this deal", Duquette said. He has a 3.38 ERA and a 5-2 record in 15 starts in Double-A this season. He experienced a breakout season for the Golden Eagles in 2015, throwing 96.1 innings with a 3.08 ERA. The right-hander has pitched 41 2/3 innings of relief for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, compiling a 2.38 ERA with a 55/18 K/BB ratio.
