President Donald Trump denied Friday that he knew in advance about a meeting during the 2016 election campaign at which Russians promised to share dirt on his rival Hillary Clinton shooting back at an explosive allegation by his longtime lawyer.
CNN, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter, said Cohen is willing to make that assertion to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the USA 2016 presidential campaign.
"Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?)" Trump tweeted.
Trump also found a way to bring his favorite bogeyman, Hillary Clinton, into this story, suggesting that she and Bill Clinton set Cohen up with his new lawyer, Lanny Davis, who worked for Bill Clinton when he was president.
Giuliani said the president is "disappointed" over Cohen's secret recordings, but said that they clear him from any suspicion of wrongdoing.
Sources say Cohen thought he deserved to be campaign manager when Paul Manafort was ousted.
Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and current lawyer for President Donald Trump, speaks to reporters at the White House May 30.
After announcing that Trump's legal team was investigating the audio recording of Cohen and Trump to determine whether or not it had been doctored, an anonymous source associated with Cohen blatantly ridiculed Giuliani, calling him "unhinged" and accused him of lying.
In addition to publicly coming out against Trump's actions, like the "zero tolerance" immigration policy, Cohen recently told ABC News George Stephanopoulos that his family "and this country" have his "first loyalty".
There has been some speculation that Cohen may be angling for a pardon from Trump, who has begun wielding - and discussing - the presidential power frequently of late. A first statement said that the participants had mostly discussed adoption of Russian orphans in the United States. "Why he has, from the beginning in this investigation-and the Trump Tower meeting is the best evidence of it-the cover-up is demonstrable because he helped create the cover story on the airplane, which has since been disproven about what occurred at that meeting".
Giuliani said that if Cohen is aiming for a pardon by threatening to testify about the June 2016 meeting, "this is a stupid way to do it".
Guiliani explained the change of heart by telling host Chris Wallace on Sunday he didn't realize Cohen was a "pathological liar" until he released secretly recorded conversations with this then-client, President Trump.
But after the release of the Trump-Cohen recording, Trump criticized his former attorney, saying on Wednesday, "What kind of a lawyer would tape a client?"
"Obviously, if I knew that I never would have said he was a reputable lawyer, I'd have said he was a scoundrel".
