Trump says his White House lawyer isn’t a ‘RAT’ like Nixon’s

FILE - Special Counsel Robert Mueller departs after briefing members of the U.S. Senate on his investigation into potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., June 21, 2017.

Trump began his diatribe by condemning the New York Times' report that White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II has been cooperating with Mueller's team and generously sharing information about key moments to the inquiry that investigators would not have known otherwise. "Anybody needing that much time when they know there is no Russian Collusion is just someone ... looking for trouble", he wrote. Now, McGahn has his own attorney because apparently he feared Trump was going to sell him out to special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

McGahn's attorney, Bill Burck, told Trump's lawyers this weekend that McGahn did not assert that Trump engaged in any wrongdoing when he spoke to Mueller's investigators in three lengthy interviews since last November, according people with knowledge of the discussions.

White House counsel Don McGahn speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), at National Harbor, Maryland, on February 22, 2018.

Mr Dean tweeted on Saturday night in response to the Times story: "Trump, a total incompetent, is bungling and botching his handling of Russiagate".

But he fumed at the suggestion in a front-page New York Times report that McGahn had cooperated fully to protect himself from legal jeopardy, giving Mueller's team more than the president was aware of in 30 hours of testimony over the past nine months.

On Sunday morning, he continued sharing his thoughts on the article and tweeted that White House lawyer Don McGahn isn't "a John Dean type 'RAT, '" adding that the story was "Fake News", and claimed that some in the media have apologized to him over it.

The report said the president had wrongly believed that McGahn would act as his personal lawyer and exclusively defend his interests to investigators.

"From the day I announced, the Times has been Fake News, and with their disgusting new Board Member, it will only get worse!" "Rigged Witch Hunt!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

With McGahn speaking to Mueller's team, Quinn stressed, others are likely to do the same.

Politico reported Sunday that Dean has met several times over the past few months with Lanny Davis, the attorney representing former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who is under criminal investigation in NY because of his business dealings.

Trump also Sunday compared the investigation to McCarthyism. Joseph McCarthy's infamous hunt in the 1950s for Communists in the US government.

When the White House learned of CNN's investigation, Mr Beattie was first asked to step down, which he reportedly refused to do.

Giuliani also tried to make the case that having Trump sit down for an interview with Mueller's team wouldn't accomplish much because of the he-said-she-said nature of witnesses' recollections.
