Immigrant charged with murder in death of missing Iowa woman

A 24-year-old undocumented immigrant accused of murdering missing college student Mollie Tibbets has been arrested and charged in her death, authorities in Iowa announced Tuesday.

The footage showed her running through an area east of Brooklyn and a vehicle moving close to her.

Based on his age (24) and the time he has been in the country (4-7 years) Rivera might have been eligible for DACA assuming he met the other requirements, such as arriving before he was 16, not having a criminal record, etc.

An autopsy to determine when and how the woman died is pending.

"There wasn't a mean bone in her body", Murphy says of the girl she knew in her younger years.

Mollie Tibbetts is the Iowa college student who has disappeared on July 18th after going for a jog in the small town where she attended school. IShe was reported missing by her family the next day, after she didn't show up for work at a day camp for children.

During questioning Monday, Rivera acknowledged making contact with Tibbetts, first by pursuing her in his auto and then getting out and running beside her. Rivera led law enforcement to the area he allegedly remembered, and that is where officials discovered the deceased female.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations special agent Rick Rahn said in a press conference Mr Rivera is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. It is unclear whether she returned to the home where she was dog-sitting for her boyfriend and his brother, who have said they were both out of town.

The city of 1,400 is Tibbetts' hometown and the last place where she was seen while jogging on the evening of July 18th. At that point, he realized he had put the woman in the trunk of his auto, and when he took her out, he saw blood on the side of her head, the arrest warrant states. "We are not frustrated", Rahn said at the time.

While authorities declined to discuss what may have motivated Rivera to approach Tibbetts, Rahn said he had seen her before but was drawn to her on that particular day.

Tibbetts' July 18 disappearance set off a massive search involving state and federal authorities.

Investigators launched an extensive search for Tibbetts across the area, including in ponds, fields and from the air. The body was found in a cornfield Tuesday morning, with corn stalks "placed on top of her".

Last week, the student's family and boyfriend held a private meeting with Vice President Mike Pence over her disappearance.

"I think someone went to the house that Mollie knew or that Mollie trusted and that she left with them willingly", Robert Tibbetts told CBS News correspondent Adriana Diaz.

Rahn told reporters he could not release information about how Tibbetts was killed. And Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said residents "are angry that a broken immigration system allowed a predator like this to live in our community".

Rahn said that officials believed that Rivera was employed but declined to specify how or with whom.
