The board is meeting with university President Michael V. Drake to consider whether Meyer should be punished for his handling of domestic abuse allegations against a former assistant coach that were raised by the assistant coach's now ex-wife. The case was dropped by police when the woman chose not to pursue charges, but Hyde was suspended three games. Smith is the grandson of former Ohio State coach Earl Bruce, a mentor to Meyers, and played college football at Bowling Green under Meyers.
"My intention was not to say anything inaccurate or misleading", Meyer wrote in a statement on Twitter later.
"I followed my heart and not my head", Meyer said, quickly reading a written statement to reporters during a news conference after his punishment was announced.
The report determined Meyer and Gene Smith failed to report the allegations against Zach Smith. The Buckeyes will be without Meyer until Sept. 2, and he can't be with the team for games on Sept. 9 and Sept. 16. He will also forgo six weeks of pay. Athletic director Gene Smith was also suspended for a period without pay.
OSU said investigators interviewed more than 40 witnesses and reviewed thousands of documents during the two-week investigation. White said the investigation committee members believe that Meyer "did not deliberately lie".
The news, surprising at the time, was announced on Wednesday night.
Following an executive session of its Board of Trustees that lasted almost a dozen hours, Ohio State announced Wednesday night that Meyer will be retained as the Buckeyes' head football coach. "Once again, there's nothing - once again, I don't know who creates a story like that".
- Investigators were troubled by the fact that after a media report in which Courtney Smith said she told Shelley Meyer in 2015 that Zach Smith assualted her, Urban Meyer asked a staffer about deleting text messages more than a year old by changing settings on his phone.
He spoke first about Meyer failing to "take appropriate management action", but quickly followed that with a mention of the embarrassment to Ohio State when he "did not uphold the high standards of Ohio State at media day". He has been on paid leave since August 8.
The public now can judge whether Urban Meyer intentionally, or accidentally, concealed something from investigators.
In 2009, Zach Smith was accused of aggravated battery on his pregnant wife while he was working a graduate assistant for Meyer at Florida.
The Smiths separated in June 2015 and divorced in 2016. "I should have recognized the red flags". "I should have done more and I am sorry for that".
Oh my heavens. "Not complete or accurate" is whitewashing for "lied". "He should've addressed it, did he do the right thing?" said Bogard.
"I just think they were a little light on him".
To some, Meyer's response exhibited a lack of remorse.
While Meyer apologized to "Buckeye Nation" on at least three occasions - and apologized for the situation everyone found themselves in - he never apologized to Courtney Smith even as he was afforded the opportunity to do so by at least one reporter who mentioned her by name.
All that matters to the Buckeyes is what he knows about winning national championships.
Other's pointed to the fallout from the tattoo scandal of the Jim Tressel era as a sign of hypocrisy. The investigation called it a "pattern of troubling behavior".
Meyer is sidelined through September 2, including the season-opener against Oregon State.
Gene Smith said that prior to the start of his suspension, he will consult with Ryan Day to reaffirm his continued service as acting head coach.
But he didn't. And now he and Ohio State will have some work to do to fix their reputations. It is No. 3 in the coaches' poll.
Gene Smith said Wednesday night, "I fully support the findings of the report, and the subsequent actions that the university has taken".
On July 26, a university attorney instructed Voltolini and another football staffer to "go get [Coach Meyer's] phone and check his texts with Zach".
Ohio State trustees have begun discussing the future of football coach Urban Meyer.
