Since McCain's diagnosis a year ago, Ducey has handled questions about succession with the utmost caution, chiding those Republicans who talked openly about the matter while the senator was still alive.

McCain died Saturday at age 81 from an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Before Trump's Monday afternoon statement, his only commentary on McCain's death had been a perfunctory tweet Saturday.
