Trump slams Democratic primary victor as a 'failed Socialist Mayor'

Stephen Lawson, communications director for the DeSantis campaign, called the assertion "absurd".

The Trump-endorsed DeSantis stepped it in big time on Wednesday morning during an appearance on Fox News in which he said that Florida shouldn't "monkey this up" by electing Gillum, who is black.

DeSantis was filmed for an ad with his toddler daughter building a border wall with blocks, while Gillum thinks the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency should be abolished "in all forms". In nominating DeSantis, Florida Republicans continued a recent trend toward anti-establishment figures such as Gov. Rick Scott and Trump, both of whom won primaries in Florida against candidates who were well-liked among party elites.

Graham, the daughter of Bob Graham, a former Florida governor and USA senator, had led in polls heading into primary day, but Gillum surged in the late stages of the race.

Many Republicans were thrilled to see the results come in from Florida.

"That is not what Floridians want", DeSantis told reporters. "This is the Florida that I know, this is the Florida that we all love, and we've dedicated ourselves to serve". His surprise victory sets up a November showdown with Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, a favorite of President Donald Trump. Incoming Florida House Minority Leader Kionne McGhee, who is black, said DeSantis had invoked "racism and division as his platform".

DeSantis, who turns 40 next month, is a former Navy lawyer.

Sinema's and McSally's Senate runs also have created House openings in Arizona, a fast-growing and increasingly diverse state where Democrats are eager to gain a foothold. Marco Rubio shut down his presidential campaign and made a decision to run for re-election. "On to November!" tweeted Trump.

Appearing on CNN after his victory, Gillum acknowledged his belief that Trump is "uniquely unqualified for the position he holds" and "dangerous" to the country, but said the thrust of his campaign has been focusing on the "everyday issues confronting people".

"Tonight as the mayor of Florida's capital city, I humbly accept the Democratic nomination", Gillum said to watch-party attendees last night as they chanted "Bring it home!" He often said he was the only candidate in the race who wasn't a millionaire or billionaire. Orlando-area businessman Chris King finished last. They finally have their test case in Gillum, who is young, charismatic and unapologetically liberal. He was elected mayor in 2014.

Gillum did well in debates, often receiving the most applause, but the FBI is investigating Tallahassee city hall for corruption. Gillum says this involves the city, not himself.

Their policy differences are pronounced: DeSantis is pro-gun, and anti-tax; Gillum boasts about beating the National Rifle Association in a lawsuit and is calling for an increase in corporate taxes. "That's what the political revolution is all about and Andrew Gillum is helping to lead it".
