Democrats Nominated An Actual Socialist For Governor In Florida Last Night

Thursday, 30 Aug, 2018

It's not as if it's just Republicans who have monkeyed around with elections in the past.

About 1.6 million Republicans turned out in the GOP primary, while 1.5 million Democrats did.

Obama called for establishing a "voting rights division" within the Department of Justice (DOJ) to combat "voter fraud" and what he said were efforts to "discourage people to vote".

Calling Ron DeSantis a "yes man" for President Donald Trump, the Democratic super PAC American Bridge is launching the first attack ad of the Florida fall governor's race, with an internet video mocking DeSantis's praise for the president.

Trump says of DeSantis' comments, "I haven't heard that at all".

Fox News anchor Sandra Smith said the network did not "condone" a comment by Ron DeSantis, the GOP gubernatorial nominee in Florida, hours after the Trump-hugging candidate was accused of sending racist signals. We're proving, that if progressives come together, we can win.

Gillum was the only nonmillionaire in the five-candidate race.

"I'm not sure what that is", DeSantis said when asked about QAnon. He also won 61 percent of the county's precincts, including big percentages in the precincts around the University of Central Florida and the majority African American precincts in west Orlando and Pine Hills. He reiterated his "full and total endorsement" for DeSantis in a tweet Monday.

But Trump's endorsement was the biggest factor in swinging the race to DeSantis.

Stipanovich supported Graham because he believed she was most likely to win in November ― Gillum's positions are too far left, he said ― and he characterized both parties' nominees as "the most extreme" candidates. The best way to win midterm elections, the thinking goes, is to nominate someone young and engaging ― like Gillum.

DeSantis also came out fighting, criticizing Gillum as "way, way, way too liberal for the state of Florida".

On the Republican side, DeSantis, a US congressman from the Jacksonville area, stomped Adam Putnam, a former congressman and current Commissioner of Agriculture in Florida, with more than 56 percent of the vote.

But in a state with as many expensive media markets as Florida, no one can win statewide without breaking the bank.

"I'm going to stay true, I'm going to stay true to my values", Gillum said.

Andrew Gillum and his wife, R. Jai Gillum addresses his supporters after Andrew Gillum won the Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, in Tallahassee, Fla.

Ron DeSantis won the Florida Republican gubernatorial nomination with a campaign that highlighted his lockstep support for Trump as a member of the U.S. House and constantly reminded voters that: "Ron DeSantis is fully endorsed by President Donald Trump!".

Gillum, the charismatic former Tallahassee mayor, overthrew a crowded Democratic ticket with a progressive platform and the backing of Sen.

In Arizona, primary contests were shadowed by the death of Sen.

While Trump held off endorsing any of the three Republicans in a contentious U.S. Senate battle in Arizona, the candidates all spent the final stretch of the campaign touting their allegiance to him.

His trouncing of the early establishment favorite, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, underscored the president's popularity with the Republican base.

Gillum didn't make race an issue in the primary. With Stacey Abrams' nomination in Georgia, there are now parallel governors' races taking place in the neighboring states, pitting a progressive African-American against a Trump-backed nationalist.
