Officers Shot, 1 Fatally, in South Carolina; Suspect in Custody

Multiple news outlets reported that one officer was dead and four were injured. The suspect behind the shooting has been taken into custody.

Both sheriff's deputies and Florence police officers responded to the shooting.

"Fire was being shot all over", Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said.

Law enforcement sources have since confirmed that one officer has died.

This is the second shooting of multiple police officers in SC this year.

Authorities say people are planning to gather by candlelight Thursday to honor the victims. Kinnard reported from Columbia, South Carolina.

The slain officer, Terrence Carraway, 52, of Darlington, had just been honored for 30 years of service with the Florence Police Department. The names of the six officers receiving medical treatment have not been released.

The wounded were evacuated after police drove in with a bullet-resistant vehicle, while the suspect barricaded himself inside, along with an unspecified number of children.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has sent his condolences to the officers' families in a tweet Wednesday evening. "And I loved him".

"I have been shooting competitively since 1984 and lovin' it".

Other posts, from 2016, show images of rifles and say he was the "South Carolina 3-Gun Silhouette Champion for 2011".

Authorities updated the number of officers who were wounded from five to seven Wednesday night.

Holding back tears, he said: "Today will mark a very horrific day in the annals of the Florence police department".

At least 5 police officers have been shot in a neighborhood in Florence, South Carolina, according to local officials and witnesses.

The court noted in the year 2000 that Hopkins was injured in the Vietnam War and he was receiving a disability payment of $1,127 a month. He was also a lawyer who had been disbarred.

Boone said the deputies went in not knowing the firepower of the shooter. During his time with the department, he also worked as an SRO at North Vista Elementary School in Florence.

Hopkinssurrendered after speaking with a negotiator, according to WBTW.

From inside the home, the suspect fired on the deputies, striking three of them, officials said.

The chief said all of the sustained injuries are believed to be from gunfire.

The suspect is male, WMBF-TV reported.

At approximately 4 p.m., investigators from sheriff's office attempted to serve a search warrant when the suspect inside the Vintage Place home opened fire, Nunn said.

Tarique Faruki, who lives on the street where the officers were shot, called the neighborhood "one of the safest places around here".
