According to the email, none of the 48 employees who were terminated received an exit package. However, why, despite knowing that sexual allegations were proved against Rubin in 2014, then Google CEO made a decision to handover the severance package to him and, in fact, accorded him a grand farewell is still a mystery.
"We are dead serious about making sure we provide a safe and inclusive workplace", the message says. Amit Singhal, a former head of Google search, also received an exit package paid in the millions after he resigned over allegations he groped an employee.
Rubin's spokesperson also denied that Rubin ever called anyone incompetent. Since the affair, Drummond has had a flourishing career, while Blakely was transferred to sales and left the company a year later. He added that Rubin "did not engage, nor has he ever been told of any misconduct at Google or anywhere else". However, it did not directly address the allegations of the payout to Rubin, or the fact that Google continued to maintain a relationship with him by investing in his new company.
Google has been picking up the reins very fast to keep its employees free from sexual harassment issues and in walking an "an increasingly hard line" on inappropriate conduct.
A Google investigation found the woman's complaint credible, the Times reported. A third executive remained in a highly compensated post at the company.
A screenshot of an alleged email sent by Rubin to one of these women said "You will be happy being taken care of ..."
"The New York Times story contains numerous inaccuracies about my employment at Google and wild exaggerations about my compensation", he wrote.
Moreover, even after distancing itself from Rubin, Google still invested significant money in his venture capital firm, Playground Global.
The New York Times cited court documents and interviews while reporting that Rubin was one of three senior executives that Google has shielded in the past decade after complaints of inappropriate sexual behavior. You can find many ways to do this at go/say something. You can make a report anonymously if you wish. That list includes 13 individuals in a senior management position or higher.
BuzzFeed reporter Ryan Mac tweeted that in response to the Times report Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Naughton sent out an email Thursday saying Google is a place where there are serious consequences for anyone who behaves inappropriately.
