Bowers traded gunfire with police during Saturday's massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue and was shot multiple times.

Fundraising campaigns are quickly pulling together relief after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, including at least one organized by Muslim Americans.

Mourners, most of whom stood in the rain because of over crowdedness, attend a vigil for the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Pittsburgh, on October 28, 2018. After his surrender, the suspect was taken to nearby Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. Federal prosecutors charged him with 29 criminal counts including violence and firearms offences, and violating US civil rights laws. He did not enter a plea. Courtroom deputies freed one of his hands from cuffs so he could sign paperwork.

"I know that she's very grief-stricken, I can imagine, and my heartfelt condolences go to her and everybody in that congregation regardless of politics", Conway said.

"He was taken to my hospital and he's shouting, 'I want to kill all the Jews!'" Cohen said. US Attorney Scott Brady said that Bowers was detained in jail without bond.

"We're missing the opportunity to talk about what this truly was", she said, "which was people being gunned down because of their faith, not because of their politics". "He was going to die if we were not there".

The White House did not immediately respond to the mayor's request. He said the Nazis were nationalists.

Some looked forward to the president's visit.

Rabbi Jonathan Perlman closed the door and pushed them into a large supply cupboard, he said. "I am a citizen, he is my president. He is my president", Myers told CNN.

Barry Werber, 76, said he found himself hiding in a dark storage closet as the gunman tore through the building. "Then I turned around and left", he said. "Anti-Semitism has always existed". I think it's really hard to have those conversations with people because, on the one hand, yes it's true there is a group that is the cause of all of our problems, so that part is true. "And to be more violent about it, rather than trying to calm and heal".

David and Cecil Rosenthal, 54 and 59-year-old brothers; Sylvan Simon, 86, and his wife Bernice Simon, 84; Joyce Fienberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Jerry Rabinowitz, 66, Daniel Stein, 71, Melvin Wax, 88 and Irving Younger, 69, were killed, according to officials.

Suspect Robert Bowers faces 11 counts of obstruction of religious beliefs resulting in death, 11 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder, four counts of obstruction religious beliefs resulting in bodily injury and three counts of use of a firearm during a violent crime.

He faces at least 23 state charges, including homicide, attempted homicide and aggravated assault against police officers. "Ain't that a kick in the trousers?"

Cohen, who is also Jewish and a member of Tree of Life synagogue, said he stopped by Bowers' room.

According to Cohen, he and Bowers had a brief conversation at the hospital.

"The last place you would expect (this) is to be in America", Greenberg said, "the country which was the best country for the Jews in the history of the identity".

Judge Mitchell said a public defender would be appointed to Bowers, who was represented Monday by two attorneys in the federal public defender's office. He is also accused of posting antisemitic rants on social media.
