Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks is a western-themed establishment known to regularly host country, salsa and swing dancing nights. "We don't know anything about him yet", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said early Thursday.

Authorities are still treating it as an "active scene". More information will be provided as it becomes available. Rapid-fire gunshots could be heard as officers crouched behind a police vehicle, weapons drawn. The shooter is suspected to have used a semi-automatic gun and smoke bombs.

"My son thought it was a joke, so I pulled him down and got behind cover", Tim told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. "Multiple injuries reported. Details still being determined".

President Trump offered praise for law enforcement's response. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. At least 12 people were killed.

Another witness said that the gunman fired 30 shots.
