The event features two title fights as featherweight champion Max Holloway faces Brian Ortega in the fight card's main event and former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk takes on Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title. Fighters to walk out to the track still hold an impressive record of 6-1 with one no-contest.
Dana White was in attendance at the event and has nothing but praise for the doctor for stopping the bout at the end of the fourth round. He possibly could be the greatest ever. The heart you displayed last night could never be taught, and I've never been so proud to be your coach, your friend and your fan.
"What a fight. You are a great champion", tweeted lightweight title-holder Khabib Nurmagomedov.
"Doctor stopped it and I agree", he wrote on Instagram on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm hoping I get Max", Edgar told TMZ this week. He won for the 13th consecutive time Saturday against some of the best competition the UFC has to offer, and more often than not, has made it look easy. Additionally, Holloway landed 290 significant strikes on Ortega, the most of any fighter in a single bout in UFC history. Ortgea showed he can take a punch. Ortega's left eye was nearly closed, his face bloodied. A bloodied Ortega and his corner were too proud to submit, so an Ontario commission doctor ended the bout after the fourth of five scheduled rounds.
However, the eagerly-anticipated 145lbs title bout was cancelled as the champion was suffering from "concussion-like" symptoms during fight week. He repeatedly slipped Ortega's punches and peppered him with jabs and right hands. But Poirier's fighting style and relevance at 155lbs would make it a ideal pick for Holloway's homecoming bout. Ortega kept throwing back, not about to give in, but right hands kept tagging him with regularity, leading to another solid round for Holloway.
"Everybody wants to see me and Conor because we fought when I was a kid", Holloway admitted. UFC 231 featured a slew of records broken by the main event victor, another shining example of why cutting weight is overrated and a few unstoppable walkout songs.
Restored to health, Holloway picked up an extra US$100,000 in bonuses for fight and performance of the night.
Holloway was forced to pull out of fights three times this year for various reasons. But with Ferguson ahead of him in the pecking order for a title shot, "The Diamond" needs a top-drawer opponent to keep him active and keep him in the mix for the second half of 2019.
"Dana White is the boss, and the boss is looking for superfights", Holloway said.
Yes, he could. Just before Round 4 got underway, the champion turned to the cageside broadcasters and signaled that enough was enough, that he was about to end the fight, just watch.
