Nancy Pelosi sparks meme frenzy during State of the Union

Those are just a few of the adjectives President Donald Trump's aides are using to describe the State of the Union address he will deliver Tuesday evening.

Wary of publicly highlighting those intraparty divisions, Trump made no mention of an emergency declaration in his remarks.

President Trump's State of the Union speech, in which he called for unity but remained hardline on immigration reform and his demand to build a border wall, got mostly positive reviews from viewers, according to surveys.

The night started off on the wrong foot between the speaker and the president after Trump gave Pelosi, his official host for the annual speech, the cold shoulder.

Ms Pelosi, who won plaudits from Democrats for her hardline negotiating tactics during the government shutdown, wrote to her party on Monday to say that she hoped to "hear a commitment from the President on issues that have bipartisan support in the Congress and the Country, such as lowering the price of prescription drugs and rebuilding America's infrastructure".

So when Trump calls for "cooperation, compromise and the common good", the obvious reaction is, you first.

Pelosi, a Democrat, did not introduce the Republican president, and he did not acknowledge the speaker by name, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Trump highlighted bipartisan successes of the past two years, including criminal justice reform via the First Step Bill legislation, before calling on Republicans and Democrats to come together to tackle "an urgent national crisis" on "our very unsafe southern border".

Stung by his retreat on the government shutdown, Trump has hardly been in the mood for collaboration with the other party, anyway. "Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards".

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said, "I think all know why she would have been a wonderful governor of Georgia".

And then the president went on to praise the women - this time, intentionally: "Exactly one century after Congress passed the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in Congress than at any time before". "Under the current administration, far too many hard-working Americans are falling behind, living paycheck to paycheck, most without labor unions to protest them from even worse harm".

But Trump in recent days has talked about the tradition and stature the State of the Union carries, and he mostly stuck to his prepared remarks during his first official SOTU past year and a speech to a joint session of Congress in 2017. On January 25, Trump and Congressional leaders agreed to temporarily fund the government for three weeks.

The president said it was time for USA troops in Syria to return home - but did not repeat a timescale for withdrawal, which in December he said would be immediate. Among the guests invited to sit with the first lady, Melania Trump, during the speech were three family members of a couple killed last month in their home in Reno, Nevada, allegedly by an immigrant in the USA illegally.

He floated the possibility of a new multilateral nuclear arms control agreement following his decision to withdraw the US from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty. He pressed Congress to approve his new trade pact with Canada and Mexico updating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"I am asking you to defend our very unsafe southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and to our country", he said, painting a dark and foreboding picture of the risks posed to Americans by illegal immigration. "But we need him to tell the truth, and to respect his duties and the extraordinary diversity that defines America", Abrams said in a short speech immediately following Trump's address.
