Second minister quits over Justin Trudeau and bribery case

We even encourage it. On Feb. 12, she resigned.

Canada's first indigenous attorney general, she was shuffled to veterans affairs in January, and a month later resigned from cabinet.

Trudeau names Carla Qualtrough interim Treasury Board president.

"The attempt by the cabinet to highlight a personal relationship as an explanation as to why the cabinet minister resigned is completely false", Conservative deputy leader Lisa Raitt said in an interview. "Justin Trudeau simply can not continue to govern this country now that Canadians know what he has done", Scheer told reporters.

This time, it's Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, that has announced her resignation from cabinet. Singh calls for a public inquiry into the scandal.

Philpott said she would continue as a Parliament member for Trudeau's Liberal Party.

The Member of Parliament for Markham-Stouffville announced her decision over social media today. Will the Liberal majority on that committee allow Ms. Philpott to testify?

Philpott is a close friend of Wilson-Raybould, who resigned on February 12 after she was unexpectedly demoted in January.

"I know Philpott has felt this way for some time". And now I'm hearing from all sides, including from liberals here, that Trudeau's brand is seriously damaged.

Last week, the opposition called for Trudeau's resignation and for launching a federal investigation to look into Wilson-Raybould's claims.

Wilson-Raybould praised the "incomparable" Philpott's decision to leave the cabinet, describing her as a "Mother of Country". The company is a major economic force with about 9,000 employees in Canada and 50,000 worldwide.

In other words, Butts' testimony may determine whether Trudeau's efforts to protect SNC-Lavalin are upgraded from "inappropriate" to "illegal". A remediation agreement is a kind of plea bargain that would force the company to pay stiff penalties but avoid a criminal conviction that could financially cripple it.

September 4 - The prosecution service tells SNC-Lavalin it will not invite the firm to negotiate a remediation agreement.

Shortly after this meeting, Butts would inform Wilson-Raybould via her chief of staff that "there is no solution here that doesn't involve some interference" ... The controversy hinges on whether Trudeau and his officials pushed her too hard to do so.

The solemn principles at stake are the independence and integrity of our justice system ... Philpott said she had "lost confidence in how the government has dealt with this matter and in how it has responded to the issues raised". David Lametti, a Montreal MP and former law professor, becomes justice minister. Both testified earlier at the committee but that was before Wilson-Raybould fingered Wernick as the person who allegedly issued veiled threats and suggested Drouin was a witness to some of the pressure tactics. "I can not act in a partisan way and I can not be politically motivated".

Both former ministers worked closely together on some of Trudeau's signature achievements, including the legalization of medical marijuana and, before that, right-to-die legislation.

That same day, Wilson-Raybould posts an eyebrow-raising letter outlining her record as justice minister and noting a great deal of work remains to be done toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. She said keeping her position would require her to publicly defend the government and its policies, which she could no longer do.

The embattled federal Liberal government has suffered another serious blow following the resignation of its Treasury Board president.

A lawyer, Erskine-Smith said while Wilson-Raybould's testimony was "compelling", there needs to be full airing of facts in a non-partisan setting.

Why are they remaining in the Liberal tent?

The controversy began with a Globe and Mail story on February 7 that alleged Trudeau's office had "attempted to press" Wilson-Raybould to intervene in the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin.

But if you want to add new people, you can't continue to maintain the status quo. "My decision has been made with that spirit and intent".
