It was to set out the history of anti-Semitism and other bigotry in America and provide examples of anti-Jewish tropes about divided loyalties.
The vote could now be held as early as Thursday, but the exact timing remains uncertain. Leadership had initially hoped to bring the resolution to the floor Wednesday, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday evening would only commit to holding the vote sometime this week.
"Let's have the a discussion about the xenophobia and the racism that's coming from the other side of the aisle and let's stop using the discussion of anti-Semitism as a way of avoiding a real discussion about policy towards Israel and Palestine and the issues that are actually on the table about occupation and the treatment of Palestinians", Ben-Ami told MSNBC host Chris Hayes on Wednesday night.
President Trump called House Democrats "shameful" Wednesday for waffling over a possible vote against anti-Semitism.
Still, House Democrats are fractured as evidenced by the recent closed-door blow-up, where members of the Black Congressional Caucus would rather go after Donald Trump than one of their own.
"I think you make more of it than there is.to be very honest with you - the press loves to foment unease in the Democratic Party but we are very united" about the House Democratic agenda, she said. Eventually, reading the tea leaves, those same Democrats who were so eager to pass the resolution made a decision to delay it. "It should not be tough to stand up to this type of talk", McCarthy said. The Maryland Democrat noted he advocated addressing both in the resolution.
The resolution was meant to rebuke Omar's comments, though she isn't named in the original draft.
"I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK to push for allegiance to a foreign country", Omar said at an event last week. Additionally, the Anti-Defamation League, a non-profit that tracks and exposes anti-Semitism, wrote a letter to Pelosi on Monday requesting a House resolution to reject what the organization called Omar's "latest slur". But he was instead bombarded with questions about Omar. In 2012, she tweeted that "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel".
The poster with a picture of the twin towers burning and Omar's face in front of it, said: "I am the proof you have forgotten". But there's a good lesson here: The old guard of the Democratic party, represented by the likes of Pelosi and Hoyer, seem to completely lack core principles.
Although Omar is not the first Muslim in Congress, she is the most visibility Muslim person in the House to date due to her hijab, a headscarf worn by some Muslim women.
American Jews, including prominent figures like Naomi Klein, have signed an open letter in support of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Rep. Juan Vargas (D., Calif.) was blistered by fellow Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) after tweeting his displeasure with Omar for her questioning of the U.S. -Israel alliance. "Instead of throwing her under the bus, Democratic leadership should have Rep. Omar's back in pushing back against increasingly risky attacks and threats from the far right".
Omar's allies, including her fellow Muslim representative, Rashida Tlaib of MI, allege Omar is being unjustly targeted because she is a Muslim woman of color. "It doesn't start with one member out of 435 members of Congress".
"It's not my position to tell people how to feel, or that their hurt is invalid", she added.
