Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters! We've got a lot to talk about.
All the characters in the "Captain Marvel" after credits scene also appear above, minus Captain Marvel, of course. Captain Marvel is set in 1995 so it contains nearly no references to the modern Marvel Universe before the obligatory post-credits scene. Now, the pager is blinking in a laboratory setup.
"This is a nightmare", Steve says quietly, as the numbers click up.
Dressed for work in a hi-tech bodysuit and sporting hair with bounce - she might look like a typical, nearly banal Marvel heroine without much of an inner life (Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow comes to mind), but it's immediately clear she has much more to offer. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) replies.
Suddenly, however, the pager dies, and the signal it's been sending craps out. At this point, we all know that the Tesseract, aka the Space Stone, was a bit busy between being recovered by Howard Stark at the bottom of the ocean and being poked and prodded by Erik Selvig for SHIELD. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) steps into Fury's office, hands him a case full of fake eyes, and jokes that he has a big decision to make.
Peter: I have my nitpicky question I gotta ask you.
Following the release of the "Endgame" teaser, I reached out to forensic video expert Ed Primeau, who you might have seen on CNN deciphering Donald Trump and Michael Cohen audio tapes. The smaller throwaway moments provide the greatest payoff, such as Fury painstakingly reproducing a jailor's fingerprint to escape his cell only to have Carol casually blast a hole in the door with her fiery fist.
Wisely, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who co-directed 2015's Sundance darling Mississippi Grind) hastily whisk Carol to Earth (circa 1995) where she can find more entertaining people to hang out with.
Even the well-regarded Wonder Woman was not without its problems, including the overemphasis on the love interest, the bloated running time, and the establishment of Diana's race of fierce Amazonian women warriors at the start - only for them to be sidelined and replaced by an all-male team of laughably bad ethnic stereotypes. Before taking on the title Captain Marvel, Carol used several different aliases, including Binary, Warbird, and her original moniker, Ms. Marvel (currently being used by Kamala Khan). Nick Fury eventually becomes the most badass spy on earth - he's the spy - so we know he's a smart guy, even at this younger age, but after he learns about the shapeshifting Skrulls, he becomes way too trusting of Captain Marvel. Carol was involved in an explosion with a Kree weapon, but was rescued by Mar-Vell, which resulted in some fused DNA, and made her a human-Kree hybrid. Carol and Samuel L. Jackson's Fury is one of the best dynamics to ever be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Whether she's Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel, this character is slight.
The upcoming film, which will be an origin story for the Captain Marvel hero, has been hyped for more than a year. That will likely involve time travel and manipulation of the Quantum Realm. For a while, I thought it was because this particular Marvel movie wasn't meant for me.
Should the projections hold, "Captain Marvel" will wind up with one of the top 20 domestic opening weekends of all time. "Which was confusing for everyone", Larson chimed in.
In the movie, Goose the cat is revealed to be a Flerken.

As for that second credits scene? Fury and Goose should get their own spinoff.
