The 33-year-old Grammy-nominated rapper was a beloved figure for his philanthropic work that went beyond the usual celebrity "giving back" ethos.
A public memorial service for rapper Nipsey Hussle is being held at Los Angeles' Staples Center today.
Video showed Nipsey playing as a kid, traveling to Africa on an airplane, practicing the Tigrigna language and telling his father, "I love you, daddy". "I love you beyond this Earth", she said. "I want to encourage you to limit your use of alcohol beverages and narcotic substances". You've been with me while I've been sick. Unconditionally. My truth is this. I want you to know I feel real Joy in my heart when I'm around you. My loyalty and devotion is to you.
He was also joined by siblings Emani and Kross Asghedom, and cousin Khalil Kimble.
Aiko performed "Eternal Sunshine", whose lyrics begin, "Is is unusual for me to say that / If I were to die today / There's not a thing I would change / I've lived well / Maybe I have made mistakes and been through my fair share of pain / But all in all, it's been OK, I've lived well". The Saturday before his death, she said she told him: "I said my heart feels as if there's possibly heaviness in your heart and soul". We fit. And you're still the coolest guy in the world to me. "Ermias told me what it was like in paradise'". "My pain is for my 2 years old, he probably won't remember how much his daddy loved him", she sadly said. The outpouring of admiration is testimony to the love and respect you've farmed. "Until we meet again, The Marathon continues", she closed out.
A letter from former president Barack Obama extolling the virtues of Nipsey Hussle has been read at the slain rapper's funeral. While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood [and see violence and gangs] ... "I'm going to share with you that text". "He set an example for young people to follow and is a legacy worth of celebration".
The letter states Hussle's legacy is worth celebrating and Obama says he hopes Hussle's efforts inspire "more good work in Crenshaw and communities like it". With the ceremony well-underway, many have already taken to the stage to mourn the late, great Neighborhood Nip.
"One thing me and Nip had [in common] was a kind spirit".
"We come from royalty and regality", she added.
His mother, Angelique Smith, said: "He recognized at an early age his own capability".
"My precedures, stay crackin 'til my life's low / Then when I die, blue rag around my rifle / Hundred-thousand in my coffin, that's just life though / Play a Stevie Wonder song, smoke some flight, bro / Crack a pint of Actavis then pour in some Sprite, bro / Until that day I'm walking toward what's in my sights, though". "I hope that you have a attractive day".
