Oscar-nominated director John Singleton dies at 51

Cleopatra Singleton, 19, said in the declaration filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that doctors were still determining the condition of her 51-year-old father.

Along with sharing the devastating news, John Singleton will be removed from life support today, his family revealed he "quietly struggled with hypertension and high blood pressure".

Academy Award-nominated director John Singleton will be taken off life support later today, his family confirmed to ABC News. Following transport to a California hospital, Singleton suffered a stroke and was admitted into an intensive care unit. Most recently, he co-created and executive produced the current FX hit drama series Snowfall, in which he engaged such writing talents as Walter Mosley.

"Boyz N the Hood" was based on Singleton's upbringing and shot in his old neighborhood.

"John is still on life support". Over the course of nearly 30 years, he has directed and produced a number of films and TV shows, receiving two Oscar nominations for "Boyz n the Hood" (1991).

Just 24 at the time, the director became the youngest nominee in the Best Director category and first black filmmaker to be nominated too.

Yesterday, actress Taraji P. Henson - who collaborated with Singleton on a number of films - visited the father-of-five in hospital and claimed he "jumped up" in his comatose state when he heard her voice.

A dispute has ensued between Singleton's mother, Shelia Ward, who has sought conservatorship over his estate, and other family members.

Singleton is survived by his extraordinary mother, Sheila Ward, his father, Danny Singleton and his children Justice, Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis, and Seven.
