Spurs have serious injury issues ahead of Ajax

Wednesday, 01 May, 2019

The final of four current Tottenham players to have played for Ajax earlier in their career, centre-back Davinson Sanchez is the most recent player to have done so. He did that in the second game against Manchester City. We were better in the second half.

"Mark was quality today, he's been quality all the season".

De Jong is hopeful of Ajax completing a treble, "We didn't get to the Champions League semi for nothing".

Alternatively, I would suggest considering Dele Alli to be the man to do damage to Erik ten Hag's surprise package. Spurs - once entrenched in the title race - could eventually finish more than 20 points behind the winners. Tottenham will be looking to make home advantage count, whilst Ajax will be looking to continue their stunning away form in the Champions League which has seen wins at Real Madrid & Juventus.

This one did, too, as Ajax continued to blossom, a nascent team which will never be given the chance to mature, with youngsters tipped for great things at wealthier clubs.

It was a frustrating warm-up for Tottenham's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax in north London on Tuesday.

"It's impossible to concede so many goals and try to win". Consequently, both sides are now just three games away from European euphoria.

Therefore, whilst the Champions League will still important for the money it brings in, it could go on the back burner.

The Blaugrana are the only club from Europe's major leagues to have won the continental treble on more than one occasion.

Now lying in sixth place and three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, United need to win their final two league games (Huddersfield, Cardiff), while hoping the Blues' only pick up one point from a possible six in their final pair of fixtures against Watford and Leicester. There could well be a double on the cards this season for Jürgen Klopp's side. They are having a brilliant season - doing well in the Premier League and in the Champions League semi-final.

This actually helped Spurs - the extra man in midfield, especially one with such energy and drive, made it harder for Ajax to pass around them, and long balls into Fernando Llorente also helped them get up the pitch.

Spurs were vulnerable to the counter however and Ajax came agonisingly close to doubling the lead, and leaving Tottenham with a near-impossible task in the second leg, when Tadic linked up with Neres whose side-footed shot rebounded off the post.

The first leg of Barcelona versus Liverpool takes place at 20:00 (GMT) on Wednesday 1st May.
