Serena Williams survives Vitalia Diatchenko in first round

Despite not playing too many matches lately, Serena believes she will be okay: "I have enough tennis in me".

Williams has been stuck on number 23 since January 2017, when she won the Australian Open against sister Venus - and when she was pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia.

"I'm just happy to win today", the American said after her 800th tour-level victory.

"It crossed my mind every day, but I'm here". But she didn't look up to her best, either, by any means. It was also Williams' first trip down the Roland Garros runway.

On a revamped Court Philippe Chatrier, the 11-times champion wasted little time in despatching Hanfmann after the German had the audacity to say in the run up to the match that he could do "some damage".

The Vogue covergirl left her pristine tennis whites at home, opting for a custom-made outfit by Nike, designed by Louis Vuitton menswear designer and Off-White founder, Virgil Abloh. She had played only nine matches all season, and so her pursuit of a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title - fourth at Roland Garros - is no sure thing. Upon her return, she sparked debate by wearing a black catsuit specifically created to help prevent life-threatening blood clots, one of many complications from which the tennis star suffered after giving birth. "It must be my hair", she said. I threw up again when I went to the locker room after the third set. That's what I told myself. "So I love that about it", she said of her 2019 dress and cape.

He said he didn't think he had food poisoning because he felt fine before the match: "Throwing up during the match isn't something that normally happens to me".

But she stormed back to level the encounter, cutting the errors by half and breaking in the second and sixth games of the set. Like it or lump it.

A year ago, Williams' black compression outfit raised the ire of French tennis officials, although Williams contended that the full-length outfit was a preventative measure after a health scare related to blood clots. The French Tennis Federation eventually banned Williams's style of catsuit, citing "respect [for] the game and the place"-and completely missing its importance".

When it was Williams' turn, she needed a bit to get going.

A code-violation warning wrongly issued to France's Alize Cornet provoked another burst of well-placed indignation at the 2018 U.S. Open after Cornet dared remove and turn around a shirt she had inadvertently donned backward.
